Hi, my first time on the forum and looking for some help please. I have tried all the options on the forum and have run almost every spyware removal program I could find.

Google has been hijacked - when I click on search results I am re-directed to other sites. Absolutely no problems when using my favourites or typing in web addresses directly so I'm guessing it's definitely a browser hijack problem.

I have run all the standard programmes - Adaware etc and used Hijack This to delete some registry entries in Safe Mode, turned off System restore etc and I've tried to follow previous advice on the forum but I am still encountering problems.

Just when all seems OK after a re-boot, within 20 minutes or so my google links are re-directed - totally frustrating! I am also unable to use system restore to go back to a previous date (would that work anyway?) because it won't let me select any of the dates, although they do appear to be available as options!?

So, I'm probably guilty of trying to fix something I really don't know enough about and it's time to ask the clever folk out there for help! Can someone give me a plan of action to resolve this problem?

Any advice greatly appreciated - Log below

Cheers!

Hello Dougie

Can you please resubmit your complete HijackThis log. The one you have posted has no header, which I need to see.

If you are uncertain, have a look at others being submitted. They start like this:

Hello Dougie G and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Before we get under way, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a mixture of malware that needs to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. I want to be cautious here and ensure that there is not something else unseen here causing the problem, and using Ewido should tell me that.

Firstly could you please disable WinPatrol, TrojanScanner, and SpyZooka from running during the fix, they may just hinder our attempts to change anything. There is normally an option to do this within each of the programmes. Sorry I can’t be more specific as I have no experience of any of them.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido Security Suite it is a free version of the program.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

[*]Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
[*]The program will now open to the main screen.
[*]When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.

Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktopand include it in your reply.
Now close Ewido security suite.

Please re-open HijackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

Now close all windows other than HijackThis, then click Fix Checked.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Your visit was short and sweet Dougie, happy safe surfing.

Hello again Dougie

That last log is clean. Let's see what is currently invisible.

Please download and run Silent Runners

* Please right click this link and choose save (link) as to download:Silent Runners.
* Save it to the desktop.
* Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
* You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
* Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

*NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.

Hello again Dougie

Three invisible files doing something. See if this helps.

Download:

Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.

*Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
*Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\hclean32.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmens.exe
csnjl.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

Please delete your temporary files.

Double Click My Computer (WinXP: Navigate to Start >My Computer)

You will see an icon representing your harddrive (most likely C: Drive) Right Click on the hard drive icon and click Properties at the bottom of the fly out window.

On the very first tab (General) you will see a button labelled "Disk Cleanup"...click that button.

Make sure the following are checked:Downloaded Program Files
Temporary Internet Files and
Recycle Bin

Click OK and Disk Cleanup will delete those files for you.

Next, go to Start>Run>type in %temp% hit Enter and delete the content of all the temp folders shown (only the content, not the folder).

How’s it going?

Hi there,

That seems to have reduced the problem but not completely resolved it. Of 20 google search result clicks to legitimate web pages, only 3 re-directs - still to the same unwanted web page.

I'm not sure if I got rid of the "csnjl.exe" using Killbox - the first 2 full pathways seem to go through OK but when trying the "csnjl.exe" I got a message box that said "Pendingfilerenameoperationsregistrydata has been removed by external process!" - and I had to click OK.

Everything else seemed to go as per your instructions...you must be a patient man to do this. Driving me :tazz:

Hello again Dougie

I am not a patient man, just a patient these days due to Menieres Disease.

Looks like we'll have to scan with Silent Runners again.

Post the log back and I'll check it out. Also let me have a fresh HJT log.

Thanks.

Hello again Dougie

Three invisible files again doing something. Try this

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmubz.exe
csebc.exe

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

To be doubly sure, try not only "Delete on Reboot" but also all the other options too.

How’s it going now?
