Ok, I'm hoping I put this in the right place, and apologize profusely if I'm not.

I'm having a problem with the Aurora malware. I've downloaded the Ewido program as well as Nailfix and also have the instructions on going into safe mode on the computer. I guess I just need to give you my HijackThis log, so here it is:

Another problem we're having, and I am not sure if it is related, is a program called WinFix 2005 tries to load itself, usually after closing one or two of the Aurora windows. If there is any more information you need, please let me know.

Thank you,
Phillip

Trevuren,

Thanks for the help. I had uninstalled the WinFixer 2005 thing, and it didn't show up when I ran hijackthis to delete it. Also, the 023 - Service: Netword Security Service (NSS) thing wasn't there to delete.

However, as I was typing the above paragraph, WinFixer loaded itself again.

Anyway, here are the ewido and hijackthis scans after running the steps you gave me:

That was an excellent result. We were after the difficult About:Blank infection and we got it right away.

I need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware
======================================
1. Please run the following program:
  • Please download WinHelp2002's DelDomains by right-clicking on the following link, and choosing "Save Target As":
    http://www.mvps.org/.../DelDomains.inf
  • Save the file to the desktop.
  • Then go to the desktop, right click on DelDomains.inf, and choose Install. You may not see any noticeable changes or prompts; this is normal.
  • Then please restart your computer
2. Please download Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg by Nellie from MWR
  • Open the zip file and extract the regfile to your desktop.
  • Double click Fix_Protocol_zones_ranges.reg and allow it to merge with the registry.
  • REBOOT your system.
3. We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc)
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

4. Print this out please
  • Download Process Explorer from http://www.sysintern...ssExplorer.html
  • Run Process Explorer and find the Process in the list of Processes.

    ffhuph.exe
  • Select the process and click Process > Suspend.
  • Then in HijackThis click Config > Misc Tools > Delete a file on reboot...
  • In the explorer Window, locate and select the file c:\windows\system32\ffhuph.exe
  • When prompted if you want to reboot click YES

Leave Process explorer running with the process suspended.
  • After the reboot, check the following items in HijackThis.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iwnasm] c:\windows\system32\ffhuph.exe r

Close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:
5. We will now delete the service:
  • Open HJT
  • Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service
  • Type SvcProc in the space provided and click OK
  • The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept
6. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Glad to know that stuff was still supposed to come up :tazz:

In the newest set of instructions, I was unable to find the "ffhuph.exe" anywhere. Did it possibly get deleted in some of the earlier steps?

Here's the newest HJT report:

The file morphed. It happens more and more frequently complicating the fixes as you can well imagine.

Repeat all of step # 4 using the file that is in the 04 entry in HJT ending with a lone "r".

It will be O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [aceyzpq] c:\windows\system32\random_file.exe r

After you have finished, please post a fresh log.

Ok, I found the file and did step 4 again, but it keeps morphing. I've suspended and deleted different files 7 or 8 times now and it keeps coming back as something new. In fact, in Process Explorer, it keeps coming back the instant it's deleted.

But here's the new HJT log, anyway:

Just out of curiosity, see if it will show up in Safe Mode. If it does, try the fix there. It's just an outside chance.

1. Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite Here
  • Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.
  • DO NOT USE IT YET.
  • (if you already have the program, please just update)
2. Please download NailFix from HERE to your Desktop.
  • This will leave a Nailfix.exe icon on your Desktop
  • DO NOT USE IT YET
3. Download and install CleanUp! HERE*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
DO NOT USE IT YET.

Everything *seems* to be working ok. The only problem is with the ActiveScan. I've had the scan window running for about 5 minutes now and nothing seems to be happening. It is something that just runs from on-line...no real downloading required, right?

But the Aurora/WinFix popups haven't bothered me since I rebooted.

I tried the ActiveScan again, and it sat there for at least half an hour without the progress bar moving at all. I did an AVG virus scan while I was waiting, though, and it didn't come up with anything.

Still haven't had any other problems yet, either.

Just for old times' sake, here's another HJT scan:

1. Your log still looks good.

2. Inasmuch as Activescan doesn't want to work with you, please replace it with Kaspersky Free Online Virus Scan. Here are the instructions you require to complete the scan successfully:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Next Click on Launch Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Standard
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected. Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
Regards,

Trevuren
