repairing win xp

i tried to repair my 250 gb hd, and as usual after inserting the win xp cd --> pressing F8 --> then press R(repair), i got the examining xxxxxxxx and it stopped there and go no further. what is wrong 'cos have a lot of data in the hd. but i tried to boot up as usual, i got the win xp loading screen and also go no further that i decided the option above with no success.
