Sluggish Laptop

I've got a laptopthat has Windows XP Home on it and has started to run very slowly. Programs take forever to start up - as does the machine.

I've tried defragging, scan disk, disk clean up, registry edit, uninstalling SP2, checking running programs (there doesn't seem to be anything suspicious in there), virus scan, hijack this scan...all to no avail. Am I missing something?
