I love you.

Righto, that's the romantic part over with. I've got this smit.fraud virus apparently. I can't use the internet. Most other things seem OK though, but at first I couldn't open hardly anything.

I've tried to run all those other programs in the preamble, but can only get about two of them to go, and they don't seem to have done much. Well, nothing relevant to smit.fraud anyway.

Some file missing, blah blah, etc. Do you need to know that? Sounds dumb I know, but I assumed the log file would be enough. I'm on a friend's comp now, but could find out I guess. I'll stop going on now.

From what I can tell the computer has some sort of memory problems now. It can't remember what it's like to be a computer I guess. But yeah, I barely even touch it at the moment. It's just not right (sob!)

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.

• Please download SmitRem.zip
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
• Please download Adaware SE 1.06
  Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.
  
  
• Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.
Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:

• Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
  • Follow the prompts on screen.
  • Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
  • The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
• Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.
  
  
• Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
  
  
• Reboot back into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
  
  
• Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log and the contents of the smitfiles.txt log by using Add Reply.

Hiya Sam, and thanks for all your help so far.

Well, I should probably make it clear again that I can't get on the internet at all on the infected computer. I've managed to download most of the programs here though, and then transfer them to the infected comp on CD, but more often than not they won't open.

The SmitRem tool worked alright, and I was able to run that in Safe Mode. I have the text file from that below. The Adaware tool seems to be installed on the infected computer, but won't open. This is because the wininet.dll file is corrupt apparently. This is also why many of the other programs won't run either.

I haven't been able to run the Panda Active Scan because of my problem getting the internet on the infected computer. I'm not convinced I can't connect however, but Explorer won't open and it's the only browser I have on it. If you have any suggestions, don't hesitate, .

OK, that's about it for now I guess. Whenever I start the infected computer it's always moaning on about the wininet.dll file. Especially if I try to open some programs. Also the ILPHLPAPI.DLL file won't start. God, that sounds serious. The file name I mean, not the fact that it won't start. Which is possibly serious too, who can tell?

Your wininet.dll file is now clean, so you shouldn't be having any more problems from it. You do have some other issues though. First let's try to get your connection restored. Please download Winsock2Fix and run it on the infected computer.

Next, I notice that you are running two antivirus programs at the same time. This can cause extreme instability and even crash your computer. AVG is a very good free solution if your Mcafee has expired. It's very important that you select one to keep and uninstall the other one.


Finally let's clean up your hijackthis log. Not all of these entries are malware, but they are unnecessary items to be running and this will help with the stability and speed of your computer.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

OK, I may be doing something wrong here, but once again I was unable to follow all the instructions.

Firstly, I still don't have the internet. I keep getting the message that the wininet.dll file is corrupt. I ran the Winsock2Fix program, and it definitely did something, but I'm not sure what. Hope that helps, .

I removed the out of date McAfee virus progam no problems.

I ran the Hijack This program, and checked and removed everything marked, again no problem.

Then problem.

I was unable to locate both the file C:\Windows\System\MSREXE.EXE and the folder C:\Program Files\Date Manager. The closest I could fine was a file named C:\Windows\System\MPREXE.EXE, though naturally enough I let it be, not having a clue what it was. The Date Manager folder remains a mystery. I was using Windows Explorer to look for these things. Are they hidden somehow? I've vaguely used DOS before, and back myself to follow instructions if needs be.

The good news is that your hijackthis log is clean.

An infected wininet.dll file will screw up your connection. So that's what we need to fix.
The Smitrem tool has been updated since you last downloaded it. Let's try the new version.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.


Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.


Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.

• Follow the prompts on screen.
• Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
• The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log in your next reply.

Next let's see if we can find another copy of wininet.dll on your computer that we can use if needed.

Please make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.


Now do a search for wininet.dll

It all seems to look good, and yet my wininet.dll file is still giving me gyp. OK, I did a search for it as requested, and came up with the following.

Showing hidden files and all, when I searched Drive C with the Windows Search tool thing, only one version of wininet.dll was located. This was in :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM

and the size of the file was 572KB

It still doesn't show up as being infected, but obviously your machine has a problem with it. And since you do not have another copy on your computer we will need to restore it from the disc.

Go to Start->Run and type in sfc and hit OK. Choose to do the full system scan. Let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

Hi Sam,

well, I ran that sfc command thing, and away it went. It seemed to find a whole handful of files that needed replacing, so I did that. I didn't need to use the CD either, so they must have been in there somewhere I guess. And when it was finished I was able to run programs I couldn't before, such as CleanUp.

Also, when I turn the computer on now, it no longer prompts me that the wininet.dll file is corrupt.

But, for all that, I still can't get online! I've double checked all the plugs and points etc, but I'm sure it's not that. I have it set up just as I do for the laptop, and that works fine. My modem uses the USB port which is a bit primitive they tell me. Still, I have an optical mouse running from either USB port and they seem to work OK. All the lights on the modem that are supposed to be on are on when it's plugged in.

I still have a little bit of "flashing" on the monitor when it's turned on, but aside from that everything seems normal. Any suggestions? I feel we're so close now, .

Running that winsockFix again seems to have done the trick, .

I have been able to run all the processes recommended in the preamble now, and the only one that seemed to have any difficulty was the Spybot Search and Destroy. It found something to do with Smitfraud, but couldn't clean it. When I rebooted it tried to scan again, and would crash.

But it seems the same files were found by Trojan Hunter and appropriately nuked, . Still, you can never tell, yeah? Anyway, the comp seems to be working fine now, and I almost can't believe it. THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!

The desktop still flickers a bit, and it's gone from that Microsoft teal to a deep blue colour, but other than that nothing seems to have changed. I think I can face the day again. Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
