I run AVG and Symantec software updated weekly. 3 days ago the system advised me that a trojan horse dialer.11.bu was on the system. AVG detected it but could not deal with it and Symantec could not detect it and it is not on their current list although many dialers are.
I am attaching a log from a scan by HijackThis and would be very grateful for any help you could give me in gettting rid of the problem. The file that AVG says it cannot remove is c:\windows\system32\saristar32.dll. The file shown on the on-screen pop up warnings are c\System Volume Information\_restoreCF1F93307-7709-43E9-896E-501024006087\RP181\A0071950.dll although sometimes different nuimbers and letters are shown.
What doe this infection do. Is it harmful to send emails? My computer knowledge is limited and I need the system to function for my business purposes. Please can you help.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.
O2 - BHO: Saristar - {C68AE9C0-0909-4DDC-B661-C1AFB9F5AE50} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\saristar.dll (file missing)

The file shown on the on-screen pop up warnings are c\System Volume Information\_restoreCF1F93307-7709-43E9-896E-501024006087\RP181\A0071950.dll

To fix this, clear your system restore points. To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

What doe this infection do.

Dialer's attempt to hijack your dial up connection, and dial oversees numbers that bill you at very high per minute rates. If by chance you notice anything unusual on your next phone bill, you do not need to pay it.

Thank you very much for your very rapid and effective assistance. The problem seems to be solved, there are no more pop-ups warning me of the Trojan Horse dialier.11.bu and I ran a full AVG scan which showed "no virus". Incidentally, the fiel c:\windows\system32\saristar.dll which AVG said it couldn't move to the virus vault was in fact in the virus vault and was deleted from there before I contacted you. I mention this only to give the whole picture to anyone else reading the case history.
I would be delighted to make a contribution to your organisation. Please let me know how-I haven't spotted the mechanism for doing this so far. Once again many thanks!
