Hi, im a newbie in this forum. i hope i am welcome here. and please help me fix my problem.

---------------------------------------------------------

Problem 1.

- EXE files are inoperative

e.g. regedit, msconfig, cmd.

when i go to start>run>msconfig or regedit, i got this message: WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE.

then, it would prompt me what to do, either open the program from a selection of list or use the web to find an appropriate program

Problem 2.

- LNK files are inoperative

e.g. desktop shortcuts no work, icons are gone(no image), quick launch no work.

when double clicking these shortcuts, i got this message: WINDOWS CANNOT OPEN THIS FILE.

Problem 3

- when i was looking for regedit, msconfig and cmd in the c: windows/system32, they 're gone.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

now, my questions:

1. how did this happen?
2. how can i get back all my exe and lnk files working
3. what program should i use to retrieve them?
4. is this because of ad-aware program?
5. is this because of my mc afee program?

any helps would be appreciated. many thenx mah friends.

Just the another question for you with ad-aware, have you done a spyware\malware scan on your computer? If not then please follow this:

Scroll up to the top of the page (in here) where it says

Do you suspect a malware (Spyware, Virus, Trojan) infection? Please Start Here.
Where it says Start Here, click on that link.

Please go to the malware forum and follow the instructions at the top....Especially the CLICK HERE .

That will give you several steps that will help you clean up 70 percent of all problems by yourself. If at the end of the process you are still having difficulty--and you may not be-- then post a hijackthis log in THAT forum.

If you are still having problems after getting a clean bill of health from the malware expert, please return to this thread.

i downloaded the hijack program but i was unable to launch the application because .exe file no work anymore. what i mean is by clicking the file it gives me a message that "windows cannot open this file and it needs to check the web or select a program from the list."

what i want is to get back my EXE and LNK files operable again. some suggest i have to sytem restore my pc but before doing that i have to make sure i would find another alternative. so i am hoping you can help me out. thenx mah friend.

Follow the steps:

1) Click Start, Run and type Command (not same as cmd, cmd won't run because it is an exe; Command is a com file)
Type the following and then press Enter after typing each one:
cd\windows
copy regedit.exe regedit.com (again as .exe wont work we are make a .com copy)
regedit.com

2) Navigate to and select the following key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ exefile \ shell \ open \ command
Double-click the (Default) value in the right pane
Delete the current value data, and then type:
"%1" %* [with quotes]
(ie., quote-percent-one-quote-space-percent-asterisk.)

3) Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.exe
In the right-pane, set (default) to exefile.

4) Now .exe should be working. But, U might still have a trojan which caused the problem in the first place. Run a Virus Scan.
If U need help removing the trojan go to the Malware Removal Forum.

After checking your system for malware try to run one of the maintanance programs. I personally prefare Advanced System Optimizer which can be downloaded for 30 days trial period. Run "sysem and disk cleaner", "registry cleaner and fixer", "registry defragger and optimizer".

By the way, why really not do system restore? In my opinion it is a great feature of windows which helped me many times. Some will argue that you might loose some material but if you choose a recent recovery date it will be nothing compared to damage that can be done by messing around with the registry. In any case, you can undo the recovery if something goes wrong.

i thouht of that already I made copes of my reg key for the .exe extention and the /exefile reg keys, but since the registry editor still is a .exe file extension and the .com renaming doesn't work because the command.com trick doesn't work, now what is there?

It's OK, my husband fixed it, but he's being smug at the moment. When I find out what he did, I will post it here. Thankyou for your time.
