I read other post on this site and joined. I have similar regarding WSEM Update and others, which I was able to delete via Add/Remove programs. However, problems still exist. I am confused on the prior posting to also install adware software but I did not do this because I was instructed to just install the Highjack this and post the log. Which is what I am doing. Install the program and launch it.

First, in the main window, look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest reference files.

Next, we need to configure Ad-aware for a full scan.

-> Click on the Gear icon (second from the left) to access the preferences/settings window

1. In the General window make sure the following are selected:

• Automatically save log-file
• Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
• Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

2. Click on the Scanning button on the left and select :

• Scan Within Archives
• Scan Active Processes
• Scan Registry
• Deep Scan Registry
• Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
• Scan my Hosts file
• Under Click here to select drives + folders, choose:
• All of your hard drives

-> Click on the Advanced button on the left and select:

• Include additional process information
• Include additional file information
• Include environment information
• Include additional object details

-> Click the Tweak button and select:

• Under the Scanning Engine:
  • Unload recognized processes during scanning
  • Include basic Ad-aware settings in logfile
  • Include additional Ad-aware settings in logfile
• Under the Cleaning Engine:
  • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

-> Click on Proceed to save the settings.

-> Click Start and on the next screen choose Activate in-depth Scan at the bottom of the page and then choose:

• Use Custom Scanning Options

-> Click Next and Ad-aware will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected.

-> Save the log file when it asks and then click Finish

-> When finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose Select All from the drop down menu and click Next).

-> Reboot your computer.

Per admin instructions to m last/first post under same id, I downloaded Ad-aware (not easy to find with link provided. I needed to go to home page to find download for freeware version). I set "most" of the settings as detailed in the response. A couple settings were not in the ad-aware software as described...only one or two I think. But everything else was worded the same.

I then followed instructions and started the deep scan. The scan found 338 critcal issues. I did a right click and selected all and hit next. All were quickly quarantined and then it proceed to delete selections. The process bar for deleting process quickly went to the end but then did nothing for 8 hours. I had to shut it down because it appeared nothing was happening (hard shutdown). I reran the deep scan again and all 338 critical issues are still there.

Oh, and I was never prompted to save the log as the admin respones said I should.

Did I do something wrong? Should I uninstall and reinstall the ad-aware software? Only delete a few at a time? What do I do next. It is upsetting to have all this "stuff" running behind the scene and more fristrating to not have the darn ad-aware software work. Help!

PS: One of the 338 critical issues was a Coolwebsearch stuff the CWshredder was supposed to take care off. I have run CW and Spobot in the past....are these missing something?

I did try deleting just one critcal object and the system just sat there.

Let's try Spybot S&D. Run a scan and repair anything it finds. Next, try Ad-aware again. Finally, reboot and post a Hijack This guide.

Well, I was about to give up but AD-aware appears to finally have worked. I did as you suggested and ran Spybot S&D. It found nothing. I then tried Ad-aware and it ran but it sat at the deleting process again...at least I didn't let it sit very long this time (read on - maybe I stopped it too soon). It also had some alerts during the run. So did a cntrl/alt/del to stop Ad-aware since it wouldn't shut down on it's own. Then the system locks up when I hit the Windows Start to shutdown. So I had to turn the power off at the plug. I then did a unistall of Ad-aware, new dowload and reinstall...and I tried three more times and each time was worse. Do something else on the PC while Ad-aware is running (ex: click start + programs) and the Ad-aware app gets washed out. Again, I had to unplug at the wall two of the three attempts. This is when I gave up. For the heck of it, I tried one more time. This time, I turned off the DSL connection, ran Spybot S&D (it found nothing) and ran Ad-aware. When it was done scanning I continued the process and then walked away. When I came back in around ten minutes, 298 of 299 objects were deleted....I was amazed and still cannot figure out why...can you? After all that "trouble". One interesting thing was that I would get between 296 and 345 critical objects found - since the scans seemed to always work (minus on time). I checked the quarantine area for what was the object not delete. It just listed a the scan quarantine file and not object. So I assume all critical objects have been removed.

Sorry to the long text, but I wanted to give you the background on what happened.
Oh, my scanner is not found now....is this related? I did notice I went from 15 processes running at boot up to two - Explorer and Osa.

Per instructions, I ran and deleted the virus you listed. I ran Norton yesterday but today the settings were changed. I also ran the Cleaner software and no trojans found.

Per my last note, I spent an hour at HP's site to fix the scanner. It appears the Ad-aware deleted some items I need. The scanner, sound controls (haven't had time for that yet) and Norton changed. Not sure what else happened. Would this happen everytime I used Ad-aware?

First of all, you have an old version of Internet Explorer. It needs to be updated.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Okay, I'm happy to stop typing that long title I created.

1. I caught the IE issue and loaded the latest IE yesterday and applied the Windows Updates

2. I have SBC DSL so that is the Ameritech link I believe

3. Hmmm, I know I have a HighJackThis folder..will check location

4. Needed to reinstall Norton and deleted temp files in that process...will do again - delete temp files that is.

Latest HJT scan: After I loaded IE6, cleaned temp files, selected to remove FastFind.exe (kept the Quicken file for now) and "local page" reference was not listed in the scan log. Did not touch the last to lines in the scan log.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
