A couple of weeks ago I got Aurora and when it finally was too much to deal with I went through ALL the steps you suggest and it seems to be gone. I did not download SP2, because I'm not sure if I wam Spyware free. THe only other question/ concern now is that this computer is running soooooo slowly it's crazy - is it because I have too many virus programs running? Which should I get rid of? Which are the best to keep? Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated :-)

OK here we go.

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download, install, and update Ewido Security Suite

Install ewido security suite
Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Please download Cleanup from here:
Cleanup. Do not run it yet.

Set up PC to show hidden files.(Click link if you do not know how)
Show hidden files

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu). Set the program up as follows:
*Click "Options..."
*Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
*Put a check next to the following:

Empty Recycle Bins
Delete Cookies
Delete Prefetch files
Scan local drives for temporary files
Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

After Cleanup! is finished:

Run Ewido.
Click on full system scan
Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "clean", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report[list]
[*]Click Save report
[*]Save the report to your desktop
[*]Exit Ewido

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they still exist:

Now reboot pc normally.

Run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

Rescan with HJT and post the log back, with the ewido and panda logs.

I am still trying to do the scans ARG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I did the cleanup, I did the EWIDO (I tried twice last night and again this morning) every time it shut down my computer after 20 minutes. After the 3rd failed attempt I ran HJT again and clicked the suggested items, now I am running the Panda Software (and have been for the last 1 hour) it has moved so I don't think it's staled, but it is taking FOREVER. When I am done I will post the HJT and the Panda scan, but EWIDO scan I don't have a log for.

OK -

It seems a bit less slow - here is the log.....

I now have SO many programs on this computer for antivirus some of them must be fighting against each other - which ones should I get rid of, willthat make it run a bit faster?

I'll post again this afternoon after I've had a chance to take it for a "test run" and see if it really is running better after I remove whatever programs you suggest.

Hi again,

We now have a good log, but lets see if we can get you running a little quicker.

You have several optional removals that we can clear, some of wheich are known resource hogs. Non are neccessary for the smooth running of your pc and cleaning them should improve performance. Any of the things you remove here can still be accessed via..start>all programs..if and when needed.

Also some system maintenance may be required...ie defragmentation....do you know how to do this or would you like instructions?

Lets sort out the optionals:

Reboot into safe mode, rescan with HJT and check the following:

I'm still around :-) I know you thought you had gotten rid of me.....

The defrag took FOREVER (my fault it's been awhile) - but now I am about to start the second part (safe mode HJT) - one question....

What did you mean by "Next, disable QBUPDATE on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter" - what is The Ultimate Troubleshooter?

WOW that's a lot of stuff!!!! My other computer had a problem and I just did a system restore (back to the beginning restore) and it's log is VERY short and the computer runs so muc faster - would I be better off in the long run doing a system restore or should I just get rid of a few programmes?

I would keep AVG antivirus that you have and dump Norton.

Regarding what you consider to be a long log, this is not a problem as most of the entries relate to programs you have on your pc and are essential for these to run effectively. As long as you only have 1 antivirus and 1 firewall running you can keep the antispyware/malware programs, indeed if you need the next part i post you will see even more recommended.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

It is still not a very speedy computer, but that could be that it never will be - it's definately faster than it was and running better.

It is so great to know that it is free of evil (except windows

) I'm already on Firefox - my sister told me about it awhile ago and anything I can do to get out from under the Windows regime is a good thing - they do have us a little trapped though (SIDE NOTE: sometimes I have to log onto sites via IE because the site won't load under Firefox - how EVIL)

I am going to download SP2 now that my computer is clean - hopefully that firewall - or the one you suggested will help to protect in the future :-)

Again thank you so much - it's great to know that you are out there helping like little computer superheroes :-)
