Smitfraud trojan; Alemod virus

My computer has become infected with the Smitfraud trojan. Instead of my usual desktop I have a blue screen and a message which reads: "A fatal error has occured in IE at 0028:C0011E36 in VXD VMM(01) + 00010E36. Error was caused by Trojan-Spy.HTML.Smitfraud.c".

In addition my McAfee security suite is detecting a virus but is unable to get rid of it or quarantine it. Message reads: "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WININET.DLL infected by W32/Alemod.c.dll virus".

I have followed all the advice in "required steps" but the problems still persist.

Blue screen aside, my computer doesn't seem to be running too badly but I have been unable to use it for much of my usual business due to concern over theft of passwords, bank details, etc.

Hi gavinda, welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your problem.

1.We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time. DO NOT UPGRADE TO SP2 AT THIS TIME

*Click HEREfor the update.

*Apply the update, reboot,

2. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

3. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')


DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Thanks for your reply to my post. Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - I've been a bit dense and only just worked out that I had a reply. I think I've got a better handle on how the site works now though so future responses should be speedier.

As far as downloading Service Pack 1a goes, I have already tried this but as soon as I attempt to install the download this message comes up: 'The file c:\windows\system32\wininet.dll is open or in use by another application' and I am unable to proceed. This is despite the fact that I have made sure that all other applications are closed, so I am assuming it's something to do with the alemod virus I have on my system.

What would you suggest next? :tazz:

*Please go http://www.howtotell.com ]here[/URL] (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer ( not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
*Click on "Windows Validation Assistant"
*Click on the "Validate Now" button.
*Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
*Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
*Enter your product key then click "continue"
*When it says "Validation Complete" please click "Continue to return to your previous activity"
*Copy what it says and paste it here

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I did what you suggested and got as far as attempting to download ActiveX, which brought up this message:
'It appears that your Windows Product Key is not valid. Please contact your system administrator or retailer immediately to obtain a valid Product Key.'

I bought my pc second hand with Windows already installed so I guess this means what I have is copied software?
