I'm currently attempting to (yet again) fix a friend's PC from disaster. When I initally encountered his computer a month ago, it was infected with the Smitfraud.C trojan. I was unable to completely remove the infection for the computer, and the computer was left to worsen until this point.

When I encountered his computer today, he was suffering from loss of internet access (which I discovered was due to the Ethernet port being unrecognized in Device Manager), annoying popups (when internet was restored), and overall sluggish responsiveness.

I remedied the Ethernet port issue by using the "Roll Back Driver" feature in the Properties menu under Device Manager. I then proceeded to follow the GeeksToGo recommended steps before posting a HiJack This log.

I ran CleanUp! first, and approximately 1.1GB of data was removed. I followed that by a scan of the lastest Ad-Aware with the settings per the instructions. It removed about 62 items. I followed that by running CWShredder, which detected nothing. SpyBot S&D found about 80 items, and 44 of those items could not be removed, even after it loaded directly after the computer being restarted.

I installed Ewido Security Suite and updated the definitions. However, when I attempted to run a complete scan, the program shuts itself down when it detects the first infection. I managed to capture a screen image of the error message Ewido gives me right before it closes down. I have included it below. The program doesn't exit entirely, as the yellow "e" is still present in the system tray. The scanning window exits entirely, and I'm left staring at my desktop. The scanning was never completed due to that error.

I followed that by running a virus and spyware scan using ZoneAlarm Security Suite 6.0.631.002. I updated the definitions and approximately 9 viruses were cleaned and about 7 items were quarantined or deleted. I then ran an online virusscan using Trend Housecall. The scan resulted in 7 trojans being discoverd. Five "copies" of the winshow.t trojan were found, as well as a single instance of the small acq trojan and the puper j trojan each.

Finally, I rebooted the PC and immediately ran HiJackThis! The logfile is included below. I know I didn't completely remove every infection from this computer, as some of the scans resulted in trojans still present and some items were not able to be removed by the programs. Please advise me as to what should be my next step. Thank you.

I forgot to add that I did go to WindowsUpdate after the Trend HouseCall scan. Windows was completely up to date.

Also, I noticed that ZoneAlarm was giving me error messages about Ewido, so I decided to disable ZoneAlarm for the time being.

Thanks again.

Mike,

That logs looks extremely empty. Can you please go in MSConfig and ensure there is nothing disabled. If there is, please re-enable them and post a fresh Hijackthis log.

Thanks,

MSConfig has 6 tabs. I'm not sure exactly what it is you'd like me to enable? Everything in the Startup list?

Hi Excal,

Everything IS checked in the Startup list under MSConfig. There are only 3 entries there, and they are all checked.

If you're wondering why that is so, it is because I use a program called RegCleaner frequently. RegCleaner allows one to remove things from the Startup list, as if I ran MSConfig.

However, be that as it may, I know the trojans are still running because my friend will receive pop-ups at random times, even when he hasn't been using the Internet. Hope this clears that up.

The only problem with removing things from startup like that, its it doesn't really fix the problem if you don't remove the associcated file if its bad.

Lets see what we got to work with please post a fresh Hijackthis log and a silent runners log
  • Please click this link to download Silent Runners.
  • Save it to the desktop.
  • Run Silent Runner's by doubleclicking the "Silent Runners" icon on your desktop.
  • You will see a text file appear on the desktop - it's not done yet, just let it run (it won't appear to be doing anything!)
  • Once you receive the prompt "All Done!", double-click on the new text file on the desktop and copy that entire log and paste it here.

  • NOTE* If you receive any warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
For some time it will look like nothing is happening. Just keep waiting.
  • Once it's done it will create a log. A window will come up telling you when it's saved. Please post that log here
