I have an issue that has (somewhat recently) prevented Windows from shutting down and have a never ending install in process. The admin guys from the XP forum suggested that I might need help from this forum.

Problem : 1) Can't install anything as the system thinks there is an install in process. Tells me to complete the first install.
2) Windows will NOT shutdown. Gets to the Windows shutting down screen and freezes. Let it sit over night without any change. Was able to shutdown in safe mode. Tried system restore. Went throguh the entire process only to be told that it was unsuccessful.

Appreciate any help or assistance that can be provided to clean up these problems.

Hi scout1,

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, u will be asked to fix some entries, delete some files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

CleanUp
Ewido Security Suite

Install Ewido, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

CWShredder

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

2. Remove Infections

Restart the PC in Safe Mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up).

Run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Run CleanUp and delete all temp files including temporary internet files

Run Ewido full scan. Let it fix any items it finds.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer,SearchURL = http://www.formature...d=272&keywords=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://us4.hpwis.com/

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{1C78AB3F-A857-482e-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

4. Delete Rogue files

Open Add or Remove Programs (click on Start ---> Settings ---> Control panel. This should be the 3rd item). Uninstall or remove the following items -

AWS / Weather Bug

Open Windows Explorer (right click on Start and then click on explore). Locate and delete the following folder -

Hi Scout1,

There are some minor stuff to fix. Your PC is clean of infections.

As regards Weatherbug, the earlier versions of the program are considered to be "bad". The recent versions are fine. As I do not know which version of Weatherbug you have, I would have preferred that you uninstall it and install the latest version if you want it !!! If you have the latest version of weatherbug, then you can retain it.

Run Hijack This and click on scan. The following items need to be fixed -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 02] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l
O4 - Global Startup: Office Startup.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Close all windows other than Hijack This. Check the boxes next to above items and click on Fix checked.

Fixing these entries in HJT wont uninstall the programs. It will only prevent them from running at startup thus freeing system resources and making your PC faster. You can always run the programs manually.

Reboot the PC and let me know how your PC is behaving.

OK,

Here's the update .......

Uninstalled Weatherbug and HJT cleaned up the items you listed. Always appreciate advice to get my pc to run faster.

Results ....

PC will still NOT shutdown under normal mode, will shutdown in safe mode. Below are the HJT logs for both configurations. Interestingly enough, was able to re-install weatherbug. First program to install in some time. (some progress, yeah !)

Here's the HJT for a normal start mode - can't shut down

Question is, whose the trouble maker ????? Though I'm a computer weenie, couple of observations .....

1) I don't have msn any longer so I can probably lose these ?????
2) I still think it's an errant windows update that has gotten confused. Though
I haven't done a detailed comparison between the 2 HJT logs, I have noticed
the absence of msiexec.exe in the problem startup. Though I'm at a loss for
why it prevents a system restore even in safe mode.

Thoughts/suggestions .....

Hi Scout1,

msiexec.exe is the program used by windows to install programs !!!! So dont delete it. However since that is running it implies that something is trying to get installed !!!!!!

Step 1

Click on Start ----> Settings ---> Control Panel ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management.

In the left hand pane, click on Application (under Computer Managemetn (Local ---> System Tools ---> Event Viewer). In the right hand pane locate instances of MsiInstaller. It will be of particular use, if you can locate any instance of MsiInstaller with a warning or error notation.

Double click on it and then make a note of the details it provides.

Step2

Download Process Explorer from HERE

Run Process Explorer and find the following process in the list of Processes:

msiexec.exe.

Click on it. In the bottom pane it will list various parameters. Please make a note of all the parameters of File and Key.

Post back the notes from Step 1 and Step 2 here

Well that certainly hit a mark. Had numerous warnings (looks fairly consistent with a muliple of 2 for each time I was on the pc over some period of time. Also had some error messages from my recent "sucessful" install the other night where I got some strange messages but didn't seem to stop the install. Anyways, first things first. Here's the info from the 2 warnings that I believe appeared at least once per pc use.

Lots of warnings over some period of time, but a quick glance through them appears to be a repeat of the above two warnings.

Download the Registry Search Tool from here:
http://www.billsway....les/RegSrch.zip

Unzip to your Desktop and double click on regsrch.vbs
(if you have script protection, please allow this to run)

In the dialog that opens enter the following:

CF5193F7-6B37-11D5-B7D2-00AA00A204F1

Press 'OK'

The search will run for a while then alert you when it is finished.

Press 'OK' and copy the contents of the WordPad window and post in this thread.

Hi Scout1,

The offending thing here is the Microsoft Money software.

The solution is to uninstall Money and then reinstall it if you use it !!! Do you have the CD for Microsoft Money??? There are no free downloads !!!

Fair enough, now on the the next problem ....

Never have used Money, ever ......

Went to add/remove programs and it does NOT give me ANY options to change or remove. Would be happy to get rid of something that I never asked for, tried, etc ....

Suggestions ?
