I'm a first time poster and I could really do with some expert help.

This afternoon I suddenly found something called Spyware Sheriff on my pc. I have run McAfee, Panda scan, Spybot, adaware and Panda but nothing seems to shift the problem.

My desktop has been hijacked so that it is now blue with a big black box in the middle saying 'Your system is infected'. In the bottom right hand corner taskbar along with the clock and items for McAfee etc I have two red circles with a white x in them which say 'Your computer is infected. Windows has detected spyware infection.' If I click on them they come up with Spy Sheriff.

I uninstalled Spy Sheriff using the Uninstall program in the Control Panel but it reappears again when I boot up.

Here is my Hijack this log:

Thank you.

Welcome to GTG.

We can definitely help you, but first you need to help us. The first step in this process is to apply Service Pack 1a for Windows XP, or Service Pack 4 if you are running Win2k. Without this update, you're wide open to re-infection, and we're both just wasting our time.
Apply the update, reboot, and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hi greynight and thank you for coming back so quickly.

I've followed your link but it will only allow me to download SP2 which I've heard has a lot of problems. Is there a way round this?

OK, it doesn't sound like you read the sticky topic. So take a look here and follow the steps there (skip those which you have done already).

Get SP1a here.

Restart and post a new HijackThis log when you are all done.
