Hello all:

My system recently became infected with a what Norton identified as a Trojan. I deleted some stuff using Hijack This, pricipally Ceres and Kernels32. When I restart the computer, however, they reappear. There only seems to be a problem when I'm connected to the internet. The wallpaper has also been replaced with a big black box which reads "Your System is Infected" and when I go into the control panel I can't change it back to normal. I decided to stop there because I don't want to delete anything important and can't identify the malware from the log. Thanks for looking.

Please download smitRem.zip and save it to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to its own folder on the desktop.

If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Reconfigure Windows ME to show hidden files:
Double-click the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
Select "View the Entire contents of this drive".

Navigate to and delete these files in bold:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\kernels32.exe
c:\windows\system\qqndaxii.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VXH8JKDQ2.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Also uncheck "View my Active desktop as a web page".
Click OK then Apply and OK.

Restart your computer in normal mode.

Run Panda's online virus scan and perform a full system scan. Make sure the Autoclean box is checked!

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
