Trojan Virus Removal - jaaste.dll and kb290333.dll [RESOLVED]

I am new to this forum. have been trying to remove a trojan virus (c:\windows\jaaste.dll and kb290333) from my home PC (running XP) with no success. Last night we tried the Ewido thing and it got all the way through finding those and other files (makes cool sounds too) but then could't delete the files either. I need help. I have and run adaware and spybot as well as Norton Antivirus (how the virus was discovered). I have seen all of your "preparation instructions" and will go home tonight and diligently go through them and make sure I am ready to proceed with all of the Hijack stuff. Before I do dive into all of this however I would just like to know a couple things:
1. have you guys/gals successfully dealt with this particular virus before? If so, is there anything specific to this virus that I should do to prepare for your help?
2. having already installed and run adaware and sbybot do I really need to install and run more anti-spyware? if yes, I'll do it. Just would like to try to cut to the chase with what exactly needs to be done for this particular virus.
3. I had removed the Aurora pop-up nightmare a couple weeks ago. have read some where maybe this virus is related?

Hi Keith and welcome to GTG.

I assume the "preparation instructions" is that Read here before posting your HijackThis log topic right? Do those steps listed there first. When you are ready, post your HijackThis log here.

1. No need to deal with a particular virus. Usually we will have resources to remove them, so don't worry about it. We will get you ready for it :tazz:

2. Follow the steps outlined in the read here... topic. Run whatever it says to run there.

3. They are probably not related. Let's see that HijackThis log and we'll tell you if Aurora is found.

Ok, went through all of the prep stuff. It's been a long evening/night. Norton is still detecting the jaaste.dll trojan virus. By the way, any idea what this virus will do (or is already doing) to my pc? Following is the Hijack This log file followed by the Ewido report. Thank you. Keith

Not exactly sure what that trojan will do, but I can look it up. Might take a while looking for it if it's not well known. We'll remove it.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Viewpoint

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Run these two scans:

Run an online virus scan at TrendMicro http://uk.trendmicro...call_launch.php. Just follow the instructions on the site to run the free online scan. If any viruses/trojans are detected, try to delete or clean them in that site. If any are not cleanable, copy and paste the infected files here. You may also use Panda ActiveScan at http://www.pandasoft...ucts/activescan. Post the log from the Panda scan here.

Did everything as directed. Viewpoint stuff was deleted, DSMANA~!.DLL was not found. Following is the new Hijack This log followed by the Panda log. Note that Norton no longer detects the trojan files; however Panda has apparently found something...

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. While in the Registry Editor, navigate to:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ and delete {FB153DCE-822E-47EC-8D00-2706E7864B37}

If any of the above registry keys are giving you problems deleting, right click on them and click on Permissions. Then click on the Advanced button. Make sure the first box (Inherit from parent...) is checked. Click OK and OK. Then try deleting the entry again. Once you're done, close the Registry Editor.

Delete this file:

C:\HighJackThis\backups\backup-20050729-212133-257.dll

Your log is clean.

Ok. Did what you specifiec in the last post. Norton is still not turning up any viruses and so I think we (YOU) did it. I just have a couple of follow up questions now. I want to do everything I can to keep my system ckean from here on. I have read you article about how to do that.
1. Several months ago I attempted to download and install SP2. It failed miserably and locked up my pc to where I haed to reformat the disk and start over. Could that have been because there was malware on the pc?
2. Is your recommendation to install SP2 and all other critical updates strong enough to risk this happening again?
3. What steps should I take just before attempting SP2 installation should I take to ensure success? Seems to me that everytime I am online for 1 second then there is a chance that something malicious will come into my pc. So whem is it safe to do the SP2 instal?
4. You recommend using browsers other than IE. We use dialup via AOL and so come up with the AOL browser. I then go to IE (which I will stop doing) but my wife and daughter use AOL for their browser. Is AOL ok to use? Since we use AOL for dial-up the AOL browser comes up automatically. If the AOL browser is vulnerable what can we do to avoid future problems?
5. Assuming that I do get SP2 installed, exactly what needs to be set up, enable, etc. to provide optimum security?

No problem. OK, I'm sure a lot of users have the questions you are asking here. I will try my best to answer them and if you still have any further questions, I suggest asking them in the Windows Forum (that's what they are for :)).

SP2 is very picky, to say the least. That's why we ask all users to hold off on SP2 install until their machine is clear and stable again. If this is your case, you should be ok to install it. Since you have dialup, you can order the CD free from Microsoft. Delivery should be quick most of the time.

My suggestion is to backup all your data before doing such a major update. If anything, you at least still have your data intact. Usually if SP2 fails or causes problems, you can revert back by using System Restore or uninstall SP2 via the Add/Remove panel.

Keep in mind though, that SP2 may cause problems with some hardware. That's why some users stick with SP1a for now until the manufacturers have updated drivers for those hardware devices.

Yes, I highly recommend using an alternative browser other than IE or it's clones (MyIE2 and others uses the same engine). Use Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape or Opera. Those are pretty popular. I like Firefox the most. With IE7 and all the hype about increased security, I guess we can give IE another chance. But I'm so use to Firefox now that I don't think I can go back to IE :tazz: I think the AOL browser is based on IE also. It just looks different. I could be wrong ;) Use Firefox if you can. Just log into AOL but don't use the browser (unless they really like it?).

I wouldn't worry too much though. As long as you keep Windows and IE up to date (with SP2 or SP1/a), you are secure than most users who don't have them installed.

Once you install SP2, there really is not much to setup. They do have a new panel called the Security Center (I hope I got the name right there :(). Basically it will show if you have your antivirus and firewall on. It also has an improved firewall now. I didn't like it much. I prefer using ZoneAlarm as my firewall.

As long as you check for Windows updates (IE is included there :(), you will have optimum security. Unless there is a new securit exploit, you should be safe from all those known security attacks.

Just install the antispyware programs also and you should be 99% safe I would say. If you don't have a lot of RAM/memory, you may leave SpywareGuard off the list since it's real-time protection.
