Hi,

I got attacked by several problems - Look2Me, Nail.exe.
I followed examples I found on this post as best I could.
I removed things that seemed similar in HijackThis.
I did not do the l2mfix, because every time you told someone else to do it, you cautioned them not to do #2 until you said so. Since I'm not professional, I never did it. Is it possible, I still have an infection without having used this fix?
Everything has been coming up clean on my scans of Ad-Aware, Spybot S & D, Ewido, Panda, and TrojanHunter

with latest exception of:
Adware:adware/searchexe No disinfected HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Interface\{72423E8F-8011-11D2-BE79-00A0C9A83DA3}
which I manually deleted.

But my computer is still running slow.
Microsoft Explorer is sucking up all sorts of resources, and
there is this odd dash at the top of the screen after the name of the page.
For example this page reads

Geeks To Go -> Posting New Topic -

That ending dash is after all my pages. I've never noticed it there before I got viruses. Does that mean anything?

Also, I read (too late) that I shouldn't upgrade to Windows XP SP2 until malware is gone. I was still majorly infected when I reinstalled XP SP2. Is that causing my current problems? Should I reinstall, now that I am 'apparently' coming up clean?

Sorry, for all the questions. Would appreciate advice. I hate working with a slow computer.

thanks!

Thanks, again

P.S. My Explorer window today wouldn't close. When I forced it to close, Microsoft automated response to the problem was to remove the IBIS Toolbar. None of my progams can find IBIS on my computer.

Yes, I still need help. I thought I was doing better, but the computer just gave me a critical shutdown. Microsoft said it was associated with Micro Trend's Pc-cillin 2002.

I will print out the hijack this log tomorrow. I'm celebrating my anniversary tonight and ran out of time.

Thanks so much for your willingness to help!

Okay, this is where I am at. Pretty much the same as I posted above.
Start up time is slower. Sometimes the internet pages come up normals speed, and sometimes they really hang.

And occasionally I get a critical error and the system reboots.

I'm concerned that I may be suffering some problems, because I reinstalled XP SP2 while I still had a bunch of spyware on the computer.

Some of the spyware that I had was: nail.exe - Look2Me and others.

Every scan is coming up clean, except for Panda finally gave me something new:

Hacktool:Hacktool/Processor No disinfected
C:\Documents and Settings\HomeAdministrator\Desktop\l2mfix\
Process.exe

Hacktool:Hacktool/Processor No disinfected

C:\WINDOWS\system32\Fight Screen Saver.exe

Possible Virus. No disinfected
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Fight Screen saver.scr

Hacktool:Hacktool/Processor No disinfected
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Process.exe

I have not done anything with these files.
Though I had the Look2Me problem, I never used the fix, because there was always the caution to others, not to use it unless instructed.

Thanks so much for your time, and don't worry about delays. The computer is still running well enough to get work done... it's simply not as stable as before.

P.S. What about that strange dash at the top of each web page after its name? That was never there before the trojans hit me.

Sorry if this sounds stupid... if I install SP1a, does that uninstall SP2? The only Windows XP installation I have is XP SP2. So I'm unsure how to uninstall SP2.

I am still uncertain how to uninstall XP SP2. I went through the Add/Remove Process - checked the updates, and there are a lot of updates, but none of them are designated "Windows XP Service Pack 2"

I did a search on spuninst.exe and came up with about 25 files... apparently all the updates. But I don't see any specific one for the SP2.

Can you lead this blind man?

No big worry. Lets run the option 2 on the LTM fix that you have now.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.
  • From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter
  • Press any key to reboot your computer.
  • After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log.
  • Copy the contents of log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left. :tazz:
IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

I just discovered this on the installation disk...

"Installation overview - This release of Windows XP includes Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP. If you uninstall this release of Windows XP, SP2 is automatically uninstalled too. Your computer will be running the operating system that it was running before you installed Windows XP, or it will not be running an operating system. You cannot uninstall SP2 only."

Now what?
