Hi!

Hoping someone can help me get rid of an annoying pop-up called WinFixer 2005.

It pops up after I have logged on to the computer but before I have activated the internet. And now it is activating itself and running.

How do I get rid of it and yes I have already completed the Malware part of it.

Before you do anything else, please create a folder for HijackThis and put it in a permanent folder (like C:\HJT) instead of the Temp folder. This is required because HijackThis will create backups and we don't want them to be deleted.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Do a search for m?dtc.exe and right click on any of the files found. Go to Properties->Version tab and see if it's from Microsoft. Do this for each file found. If it's not from Microsoft (or doesn't even have a version tab) and it was created recently, then delete it.

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here.

Just wondering. Were you able to find and delete this folder:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.4\

You have 3 antivirus programs installed (one of which you must uninstall). Ewido can stay but AVG or Norton must go. They will conflict with each other.

Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I am not sure if I deleted Conflict.4 or not I didn't keep track. I do know that all of those files that you asked me to delete are deleted.

In terms of Ewido, Norton and AVG. I only have Ewido for a 14 day trial so I can't keep that one. I was also told by a computer person that not one anti-virus program can provide 100% coverage so therefore I need two or more. So what I do is I deactivate AVG when I am on the computer so that I just have Norton active.

Let me know your thoughts.

OK, for that CONFLICT folder, I will ask you to do something else. Go to Start->Run and type in cmd and hit OK. Then type in the following (hit Enter key after each line):

rmdir /s "C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\CONFLICT.4\"
exit

If it didn't give you any error messages back, that means that folder did exist and is deleted now.

Ewido is 14 day free trial, but after the 14 days, the PRO features will be deactivated and it will become the free version. So keep it and uninstall AVG or Norton instead. Ewido will NOT (according to them) cause any conflicts with either AVG or Norton. But AVG and Norton will cause conflicts with each other. My suggestion is to get rid of one of them. You will still have two programs left. If anything, go online also and do a virus scan.
