I hope someone can help. :tazz: I recently turned on my computer and on my background a Spyware warning from PSGuard came up instead. It said that my computer may be infected and I should click on it. Then I tried to access the internet and 44 Microsoft Internet Explorer screens popped up all around the computer. I deleted all of them and the computer froze. I restarted the computer and it kept freezing. My settings change every time I turn on the computer. Now my background is half of a picture that was in my email folder. I ran Ad-Aware, About Buster, Spybot-Search and Destroy, and several others. I tried to download Panda Software, but it kept saying that my ActiveX controls wouldn't allow it to download. I changed my internet options to enable Active X, but it still wouldn't work. I can't seem to find and destroy this virus. I'm an elementary teacher starting school soon, and I'm afraid that my files will be lost with my school info on it. Thank you so much for your time. I hope to hear from someone soon. I will try to attach my hijack this file, but I'm not the most talented person with computers. ;)

Welcome to GTG.

You have more than one infection there. Let's get rid of them one by one.

Download CWShredder http://www.greyknigh.../CWShredder.exe

Right click a blank part of your desktop & select New->Folder. Call it SPFix. Go to http://www.derbilk.de/404.html and download SpSeHjfix. Get the one that's specified for your Operating System. So if you have Windows 98, get the one that's listed for Windows 98.

Disconnect from the net and close all programs. Run SpSeHjfix and click on 'Start Disinfection'. When it's finished it will reboot your machine to finish the cleaning process. The tool creates a log of the fix which will appear in the folder.

If it doesn't find any of the SE files or any hidden reinstallers it will say system clean and not go on to next stage.

Now run the CWShredder and hit the Fix button.

Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log and the log that was created by SpSeHjfix.

Hi GreyKnight17,
Thank you for helping me. It doesn't seem as if the CWShredder or the SpSeHjfix found anything. I am attaching my new HijackThis log and the other log.
Thank you, Aimers624

Why are you attaching the two programs here? I don't need the programs, just the logs :tazz:

SpSeHjfix did the trick. It removed one of the infections here ;)

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.
5. When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning 'Database could not be found!'. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
6. You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
* On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
* Then click on Start Update.
7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display 'Update successful')
8. Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can go to http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ to update manually.

Download CCleaner at http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp and install it, but do not run it yet.

Please download Nailfix Utility at http://www.noidea.us...050711214630636 Save it to your desktop. Do NOT run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click 'Next' in the setup, then make sure 'Run Nailfix' is checked and click 'Finish'.
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open Ewido and do a scan on your system.

* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
o You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
o If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
o Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'
o If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now as the action.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [fd4867813c33] C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [2927979b7445] C:\WINDOWS\System32\colbact7.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outpostupdate] C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard spyware remover] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [outpostupdate] C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [outpostupdate] C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe

NOTE: The 04 entry may have changed names if you have rebooted since posting the log; look for an entry with a similar format, that will always end in a single letter r.

Locate and delete the following:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\colbact7.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe
C:\Program Files\PSGuard\

Now run CCleaner.

1. Uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Internet Explorer'.
2. If running Firefox: click on the 'Applications' tab and uncheck 'Cookies' under 'Firefox'.
3. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.

Finally, restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log, as well as the report log from the Ewido scan.

So, far, things seem to be looking better. I found spyware activity and a trojan thing while scanning for viruses. I couldn't find or delete the following from the Hijackthis :

C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\colbact7.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe
C:\ProgramFiles\PSGuard\

Here is my new HijackThis log and the Ewido scan:

Don't look for these in HijackThis:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\colbact7.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\outpostupdate.exe
C:\ProgramFiles\PSGuard\

You won't find it. I want you to go back to Windows and look for those files/folder and delete them if found. Start in My Computer-> C: Drive....whatever the above says...just follow the path.

Made a mistake there - nothing to worry about though. Do this fix now:

Download smitRem.zip at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.
Unzip the file to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\intell32.exe

Open the smitRem folder and double click on the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido log (if you ran it).

Yeah! My background is back to normal. I searched for the C:\WINDOWS\System32 and the Program Files\PsGuard and I found:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.dll and colbact7.dll

Is this the same thing as C:\WINDOWS\System32\clbcatex.exe and colbact7.exe?
I didn't delete them because the ending looked different. I couldn't find the C:\ProgramFiles\PSGuard\

I followed the rest of the directions with Ad-aware and Ewido. I had trouble with pandasoftware. It said that I needed to download ActiveXControls (8 mb) if it was my first time using this software. I didn't know how to do that. Here are my logs.

This file looks bad -> colbact7.dll

I want you to upload that file and all those you mentioned to http://virusscan.jotti.org and report back what it found. Or if you know it's bad from the report, delete it. Just as a double check, see when they were created. If recently during this problem you have, then delete them.

For the panda problem, go here and download the file there. Install it and try running Panda. Does it work now?

I uploaded the four files to http://virusscan.jotti.org and the colbact7.dll, outpostupdate.exe, and ProgramFiles\PSGuard files reported this:

The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file.

The clbcatex.dll uploaded. Under the scan it said... Fortinet: Found W32/SDBot.EOC5.net.

I downloaded the file for panda to my desktop and tried to run it again, but it still didn't work.

This is only one file there that looks legitimate. OK, check to see if this file (clbcatex.dll) was created around the same date as the other 3. Is it recent? If so, delete it. I think the legit clbcatex.dll file should be created around March 2004.

OK, use this program instead since Panda still won't work:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.

I looked at the date clbcatex.dll was created. It was created on May, 2004. I didn't delete it yet. Here is the log from mwav. It said that it detected 64 viruses. Is that true?

64 viruses? Where? I don't see it saying that here.

*Download RegSeeker http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm and install it.
*Click on 'Clean The Registry' in the left panel.
*Check all boxes (make sure the backup box in the lower left corner is selected!).
*After it runs, click 'Select All' on the bottom. Then right-click on any selected item in the window and select 'Delete Selected Items'.
*Click 'Quit RegSeeker'.

Now, open any of your installed programs, and make sure that everything opens ok. If so, reboot, then go back and run RegSeeker again. Do the same thing again if anything is found. You may have to run RegSeeker 5 - 6 times, but you want it showing none to very few items.

*Make sure to reboot between each use of the program.

Run CCleaner again.

Restart.

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If not, you should be set to go.

I ran RegSeeker about 12 times and the last 5 times, the same 26 things were found. I deleted each one of them every time, but they still came up after I rebooted my computer. I ran CCleaner. When I reboot my computer now, it says "Failed to start the control center 2.0. The required registry installation is missing. Please re-install the MFL-ProSuite." What does this mean?
Is it okay to have 26 things come up still, or should I keep running RegSeeker?

We'll leave those 26 items alone then. If you want, tell me what they are mostly. Probably MRU entries.

I'm not sure what happened there, but let's try restoring the registry file then. Before we do that, do you still have that message coming up today? If so, then I want you to run RegSeeker again and go to the Backups tab on the left-bottom panel there. Select the last cleanup date/time you did and restore it. Just do it for the most recent backup there. Then close RegSeeker and restart your computer. Does that error message still come up? If so, I want you to go back to RegSeeker and use up the next recent backup. Keep repeating this until that message doesn't show up again.

Hopefully it will restore the problem. If not, post back here and I'll see if I can come up with anything else.

Are you having any other problems currently (in regards to spyware/viruses)? If not, see how the error problem goes. Post back so I know the status of this problem :tazz:

I went to RegSeeker and even though I checked off "Backup before deletion", when I click on Backup, nothing comes up. I can't get a date/time for any of my cleanups. The error is still coming up.
The items that still come up on the RegSeeker are:
software\microsoft\windows\shellnoroam
applications\winword.exe
S 1 5 20\software\microsoft\windows

Thank you for your continued help.
