Please help.
Ad-aware and SpybotS&D both find the registry entries and files but cannot remove the culprits, even when run on startup and in safe mode, they keep coming back.
Trojanhunter found intell32.exe but called it only a "possible" trojan.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Close Ewido, we will use this later.

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapp...://my.yahoo.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System32\msmsgs.exe

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Now open and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

12. Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

13. Run the program CleanUp!

14. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

15. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

2. may these .tcf files be deleted?
3. is the tracking cookie suggestive of continued infection (the only websites I have visited since the fix are Geekstogo and theage.com.au)?

5. does this include all user profiles including administrator?
6. should I now install sp2 on this machine?
7. can I delete the desktop.ini file or move it elsewhere?

3. is the tracking cookie suggestive of continued infection (the only websites I have visited since the fix are Geekstogo and theage.com.au)?

1. They should be deleted. I believe its the leftovers, possibly a type of backup made by clarion for windows.

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\intmon.exe.tcf
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "yes".

the other tcf file u don't have to worry about. Thats in the systemrestore point and will be delete once we reset your point.

3. I would say no on the cookies. You are going to get cookies everywhere you go, unless you have them totally blocked.

4. This account is clean.

5. I would do hijack's on the other profiles also

6. I would wait to see if the other accounts are clean first

7. I am not sure why thats there, but it doesn't appear to be malicious. Most of them have the hidden attribute, so it may go away as soon as you rehide your folders. If it bugs you, you can try putting it somewhere like in document and settings, reboot and see if it has any ill effects on your desktop.

I tried to run HJT on the other accounts.

Lisa Klepfisz is the administrator account and the one we already cleaned.

I could not run HJT on "Guest" as it would not write to the log file and during the process it had a problem with the hosts file. I did run Ad-aware in Guest mode and it only found an Alexa registry key that I deleted.

The only other account is something called ASP.NET Machine A..., a limited password protected account that I have no idea who set it up and what it does. I can;t choose to log in under that account, though.

When I boot in safemode, there is an Administrator account as well as the Lisa Klepfisz account to choose from, bu tno Guest account.

I ran HJT in the Administrator account in safemode and saved the log file:

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

I did almost all that you suggested and am now running SP2 and all the spyware protection I could find.
I didn't feel ready to switch to Firefox just yet, but I did strengthen my internet zone quite a bit.
