Display properties tabs missing [RESOLVED]

I have been having problems with my wifes computer for a while and just recently noticed the display settings tabs are missing. All that is there is the change theme setting. Some of the other symptoms are, locking up on the internet intermittently with no detectable pattern, also once in a while a blue screen will come up with text that I can't remember what it said filling the page. Something about a fatal error and the only way to get past it is to manually restart the computer. This blue screen is not the traditional blue screen of death associated with windows GPF.

I have followed the directions to the letter in the do this first thread and found a bunch of stuff that I didn't find with the other programs I usually run, but to no avail. I also tried a few of the other tips from other posts such as checking for registry entries that would block the tabs. None there.

I am running Win xp pro sp2 fully updated.

I look forward to working with you on this problem. I have been working with PC's for about 10 years and never had one stump me like this. I would like to avoid doing a slick install of XP if at all possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Scan again with HijackThis and check the following items:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

After checking these items, close all browser windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked".

Find and delete these files and folders (if they are still there):
C:\Program Files\AWS <= this folder

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt (C:\smitfiles.txt) log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

OK, did everything with out any luck at fixing the problem. I did notice though that when in safe mode, the display tabs are there. One other thing that is happening, when I reboot, I have to turn the windows firewall on manually.

Download the following reg file to your desktop by right clicking on the link, and selecting save as.

Once it has downloaded, double-click on the smitfraud.reg file on your desktop and when it asks if you would like to merge the data, click on the Yes button.

Reboot your computer and you should now be able to change your desktop settings back to how you would like it. If your desktop still looks strange, go into your display properties and click on the Themes tab. Change the theme to Windows XP and you will now be using the default Windows XP settings. Then change them as you see fit.

This is getting a little frustrating, did what you suggested with no luck.


While scanning through some of the other posts about this problem, I noticed some refer to multi user computers. I don't know if it matters, but this one has two users on it. Should I run through everything on both, the problem with the tabs missing is on both profiles. Also, could the problem with windows firewall having to be reactivated after each reboot be tied in with this or is that yet another problem altogether?

Yes, please use desktoptab.reg and smitfraud.reg on both profiles.

OK, I ran both reg patches on the second profile with no change. One thing I did notice is that if I change the theme type to get the apply button active and click it, all the tabs return till I exit out and re-enter. Then they are gone again. Once I get them there I can make changes, however the advanced button for the settings only gives me default monitor settings. Nothing there for the display adapter or anything else. This comp has a built in graphics adapter that I have disabled and installed an AGP Ti4200 in its place. The hardware properties area shows it working just fine. I am about to give up :tazz: and re format the [bleep] thing.

Please go to: start > control panel > display > desktop tab then the customize desktop button then the web tab, then tell me what is listed there.

Did that, no tabs there. I had to cycle to another theme to get the apply button active and got the tabs back. The only thing in the web tab is my home page without a check mark. When closing the diplay page I got a rundll32 error this time around.

Umm!? No, I still have no tabs unless I fiddle with the theme and then they are gone when I go back into properties.

Any other ideas?

If not I'll just go ahead and dump this piece of c#*p and start all over

Tried it, still no luck. I have been reading some of the other threads about this problem and found one that actually ended with the desired result. Take a look at
http://www.geekstogo..._XP-t39509.html . I am going to follow what they did and see what happens. I think I'll try the last thing first as that is where is seems they fixed the problem. Let me know what you think and I'll post my results here.
