Here's the symptoms:
(Running xp on a 3 yr old Dell desktop)
1. Back button on browser sometimes doesn't work
2. "one of your disks needs to be checked for consistency"
3. "viewmgr.exe - corrupt file"
4. "... temp internet/IE5/gxmvk9ub is corrupt & unreadable Run chkdsk"
5. "errors found chkdsk cannot continue in read only mode"

I've run Spybot & gotten all the patches & updates for XP from microsoft.
Thanks mucho for helping
