computer wont turn off

i have win xp pro w/sp2 when i shut down my computer it stays on the screen where it says (it is now safe to turn off your computer) and the computer stays on

Howdy and welcome to G2G:

Couple things to check..

First, go into Control Panel>Power Options.. Click on the APM tab at the top and make sure APM is enabled..

Also, boot into BIOS and make sure ACPI is enabled if there!!
