Dell 4300S system with XP home edition, slow at starting up. I know I have
spyware and bunches of adds, non used programs etc. I've downloaded
Hijack-this, Ad-Aware, and Spyware Blaster. I need a step by step walk through.

Uh oh! You need Windows Updates.............
Apply the update, reboot, and go here to this link and apply all critical windows updates except service pack 2.
http://v5.windowsupd...t.aspx?ln=en-us
Spyware and viruses interfere with the installation of service pack 2 and you will have another world of problems if this is installled before we remove the spyware.
Reboot and post new log.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure.

Please save Hijack This in a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?.
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

C:\PROGRA~1\Toolbar
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p4ith.dll
C:\Program Files\WebSavings_from_Ebates
C:\WINDOWS\Meruoq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\rlzplc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\byimpc.exe
C:\Program Files\VVSN
C:\WINDOWS\System32\winupdtl.exe
kd1ace.exe <<Run a search for this one (start, search) and kill it (probably in one of the same folders as the rest of these
C:\WINDOWS\bwdipob.exe

Reboot normally and run hijack this again. I have a strange feeling that the hijack entries you're removing are going to be back or changed and named something different. If so reboot into safe mode and remove all of the ones I have listed above and search for the files again too. Reboot normally and post new log.

Hello Jonnyrotten, I found a couple programs to remove, rebooted, fixed
the list of files you showed, rebooted into safe-mode and did searches for the
other list but came up not finding any of them. Ran Highjackthis.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure. Please move Hijack This to a permanent folder (i.e. C:\HJT). This ensures backups are saved and accessible.

Please reboot into safe mode - How do I boot into "Safe" mode?.
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\zgktkh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p4ith.dll

Next, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = http://www.seekerbar...spx?tb_id=50154
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A78860C8-EE1A-46DF-A97F-E3E6D433E80B} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\p4ith.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_05\bin\jusched.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [zgktkh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\zgktkh.exe /k
O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [zgktkh.exe] C:\WINDOWS\System32\zgktkh.exe /k
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

If you don't use MSN Messenger, fix these too:
O9 - Extra button: Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Windows Messenger - {FB5F1910-F110-11d2-BB9E-00C04F795683} - C:\Program Files\Messenger\MSMSGS.EXE

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log, and let us know how your system's working. <_<

How's your system running? According to your log, Congratulations! Your system is CLEAN <_<

How do you prevent spyware from being installed again? We strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster (it's free for personal use).

Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page.
Link to SpywareBlaster: http://www.geekstogo...tion=show&id=12

It's also CRITICAL to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks. Click Here to make sure that you have the latest patches for Windows.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW (If you haven't already). Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Running an anti-virus and keeping it up-to-date is REQUIRED to keep a clean system. If you don't have one or are sick of paying for what you have, AVG offers a great, free anti-virus:
http://free.grisoft....us/doc/2/tpl/v5

A firewall is also another MUST. If you do not have one or Windows XP Service Pack 2, both Zone Labs and Sygate offer great, free firewalls. I suggest using Zone Alarm for an advanced user or Sygate Personal Firewall for beginner users.

These next two steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection.
1. Use ANY browser at all times besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness. We usually recommend Firefox (You'll need to use IE only to visit Windows Update).
2. Install Sun's Java. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine.

It's okay to delete the Hijack This folder in a couple weeks if everything is working okay.

After doing all these, your system will be thoroughly protected from future threats. :D
