Hello. I am new to this forum and registered today. My computer is broke, can you fix it. It is black and plugs into the wall. I think my cat might have peed on it.



Just kidding. I did register today though. I went through the steps and also scanned with Microsoft's Beta anti spyware program. I had aurora before and that seemed to help with some manual tweaking.

Anyway, now I started seeing these popups with web-nexus. I was already on the latest Windows XP service pack when this started.

Like I said I went through the steps and also have McAfee Scan for viruses. That didn't seem to find anything. Spybot Search and Destroy did name web-nexus in it's list and I had it remove the program. But when I rebooted I started seeing the pop-ups from web-nexus again.

Thank you for the best laugh I've had in days!! I'm still chuckling over the cat peeing on it. I had a picture of horror pass through my head. My kitties would be living outside if they did that to my computer!

Ok ok, on with getting your computer cleaned up! My name is Kat, and I'll be helping you along the way. Let's start off with a couple of scans, ok?

First:
Please download ewido security suite it is a free version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will now open to the main screen.
• When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
• When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

After it finishes, make a post back here with a copy of the Ewido report, as well as a new HijackThis log, and we'll continue on!

I did what you asked and the logs are below. One note, I had rebooted before after I posted these logs. The web-nexus stuff was back and I reran my MS spyware and Ad-aware and spybot search and destroy. The web-nexus stuff stopped so I have not rebooted again. The following runs are from now when I don't see the pop-ups. I can rerun these after a reboot if you want.

hmm ok. You have a Q00logic infection. Even though Ewido shows it cleaned it, that may not be the case. I want you to re-run Ewido for me. BUT....first boot into SAFE MODE. To do this, continually tap the F8 key as the machine starts to boot. Then choose Safe mode. Open Ewido, and do the scan as described above. IMPORTANT NOTE: During the Ewido scan...it is VERY important that you DO NOT run any other program, don't open any folders or files...nothing else. Not even Solitaire.

Once it has run and you have saved the log, reboot normally and post me a copy of THAT Ewido log, as well as another HJT log taken AFTER the Ewido scan!!

I also had my firewall ask if alg.exe in the system32 folder could connect to the internet. Should I allow that? I wasn't sure if that was something that could get corrupted.

Ensure that all other windows and programs are closed, and click the "Fix Selected" button. Then reboot into Safe Mode.

Go to Start>Control Panel>Add and remove programs and uninstall the following:

Viewpoint
Partypoker

Find the following folders and delete them:
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Partypoker

Find and delete the following files:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\nidhvj.exe


Reboot normally and post a fresh HJT log here in a reply, and let me know how things are running

- Did I have to remove party poker? I do use it from time to time, but I did as you asked.

- There was no nidhvj.exe file in the system32 folder.

- Do you know if I should allow alg.exe to connect to the internet?

These are some tips to reduce the potential for Spyware/Adware/Virus infection in the future:
I would strongly recommend reviewing and installing the following applications if you dont currently have them running on your system:

Use Anti-Virus Software
It is very important that your computer has Anti-Virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software
It is imperitive that you update your Anti-Virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your Anti-Virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall
I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

[/list]I strongly recommend using both of these programs to catch most spyware/adware

Prevention Programs:

• SpywareBlaster -- SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• SpywareGuard -- SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad -- IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts File -- The MVPS Hosts File replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
• Google Toolbar -- Get the free Google Toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other Necessary Programs:

• A More Secure Browser
  Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser.
  There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend using Firefox

Be sure to also keep up with Windows and IE updates.

Update all these Programs Regularly:Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released. Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
