No.. If you could boot up with the bad system, you could try to make a simple LAN, but because you can't, you WILL need the adaptor..

I'm trying to get the network working, so far managed at least to get the computer to work with the network. just the laptop that i had started with, with the problems is still to sort, however i get this new message after i put in the network cable into it n start up:

"pxe-e51: no dhcp or bootp offers received"

is that any better or have i screwed up the laptop further?

you need to make sure that network boot is disabled in the bios

i can't disable booting from network from the bios i got... but i have put it last in the order
