Hi all,
got hit with the PSGuard Virus a couple of days ago. Found this great website, which helped me identify the type of malware this was. I have been having the usual symptoms, plus a few "interesting" ones.....

1) hijacked desktop
2) little red button with exclamation point in the msg tray saying I'm infected
3) psguard fires up on startup
4) IE directed to that weird search web page as it's home page, lots of pop-ups
5) my XP profiles appear to be corrupted
6) my DVD/CD-writer drive shows up in explorer, but doesnt work
7) my current anti-virus SW worked at first, but doesnt work now that I tried to update.

I hadnt backed up files in a while, so was in a bit of a panic until I figured another work-around... may be helpful for others: In Safe mode, the USB ports still work - went and got an external HDD, and viola - I was able to transfer the files

Went and followed the instructions on the starter page.
ran ewido, spbyot, cwshredder, SBC Yahoo Anti-spy, Trend-Housecall, and did the Windows update.

I followed the link, and clicked on the SP1a links, and it gave me a lot of critical security updates, but nothing that said SP1a specifically. After restart, when I look at my computer properties - it still doesnt indicate that I have SP1, but when I re-do the MS update website, it wants me to install SP2. Is there another way to force an SP1 install??

Anyhow, after all this, there is some improvement (#s 1 and 4 are fixed for now; 2, 3 and 5 still occur; hadnt checked the others yet). I still have the PSGuard on my desktop, and in the startup folder. Here is my HJT log file:

As I mentioned above, I'm having trouble loading SP1a.

when I follow the link to microsoft's update site, and click the links specific to SP1a, it takes me to the screen where you can choose either express install or custom install (When I read the verbage on the web page, it says that is the express install for Sp1a). The first time, after it checked my computer, it had me install 17 critical security updates, but as you can see from the HJT log, it doesnt look like SP1a was one of them.

when I re-run the update site again, after checking, it is asking me to load SP2. so, is there a way that I can force an upload of SP1a?? I agree, we dont need to be spending our time cleaning this stuff off, only to have it re-populate every time I'm hooked up to the 'net.

A side question - when I first got hit, I was trying to download and run the anti-spyware from "safe mode with networking". While everything downloaded and installed OK, updates did not work (had to go back to normal mode to get those). What is the difference when you're in safe mode with networking? I would assume you can still get new infections while in safe mode...

In safe mode only essential programs get loaded.

Open Notepad.
Copy the text from the box to an empty file.
Save it as ‘check.bat’ to your desktop.
Choose ‘save as all types *.*’

regedit /e c:\version.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Install Check"

Close Notepad.

Find ‘check.bat’ on your desktop.
Doubleclick the file. It will create a file called ‘version.txt’ on c:\
Copy the entire text and past it to your reply here in this topic.

Please go here (Microsoft website) using Internet Explorer (not Firefox or any other browser as they won't work)
Click on "Windows Validation Assistant"
Click on the "Validate Now" button.
Be patient while the ActiveX loads, do not click on any links.
Read the instructions on this page while it's loading. You will be prompted to install - click YES.
Enter your product key then click "continue"
When it says "Validation Complete" please click "Continue to return to your previous activity"
Copy what it says and paste it here.

ran this utility. It apparently auto-detected my product key, as it said something like "your windows operating system appears to have been installed as OEM equipment" or something like that.

Here is what it said after I clicked 'continue". I'm assuming we don't need to do the anti-piracy checks?

I had to ask you that, it's the site's policy. Let's remove the malware first then.

Please read these instructions carefully. You may want to print them. Copy the text to a Notepad file and save it to your desktop! We will need the file later.
Be sure to follow ALL instructions!


Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.

The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.On the left hand side of the main screen click update
Click on Start
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, please download and install AdAware SE 1.06.
Check Here on how setup and use it - please make sure you update it first.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your computer.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the report and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hey,
long story short - thanks to someone from the Windows forum, I was able to force an update with SP1. Interestingly enough, it may have undone some of the "high or critical priority" updates that I got from the MS site the last time around. Also now, if i try again, it only wants to put SP2 on there.... My desktop is not hijacked again, but I have that "Active desktop error screen", and dont have the tabs under properties to change it - so it seems similar to what was there originally with PSguard.

Before I run all the scans, take a look at this latest HJT log below, as I see many things for one click searches, and the about:blank site - figured you may want me to get those too before I run all the scans. So if you want, give me a new list of stuff to kill in HJT based on this, and then I will follow the remaining directions.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop. Choose overwrite to make sure you have the latest version.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.


The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.On the left hand side of the main screen click update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
Once the updates are installed, close Ewido for now.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed.
Post me the contents of the smitfiles.txt log as you post back.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Now open Ewido Security Suite:* Click on scanner
* Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
* When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
* Save the report to your desktop
Reboot your computer.

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan.
Save the report and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

I stepped through the instructions, and a few interesting things occurred:

the first time I ran HJT, none of the "oneclicksearches" items, and one of the about:blank items were not there (so obviously, I couldnt fix them).

- the "red.clientapps.yahoo.com/...." items appear to be part of my sbc dsl provider stuff, as they have sbcdsl embedded in them - so I didnt "fix" those.
- the weatherbug related items are for a program that we want to keep, so I didnt delete those.

Ran all the scans, except for the Panda - that one ran for a half hour, and showed no progress with the CPU pegged at 100%. not sure what happened there...

re-ran HJT, and all the items are there (even re-booted in safe mode, and they are also all there too, so I have no explanation for why certain items weren't there in the first place).

I also still dont have the desktop tab when I look at control panel>display> the only two tabs are screen saver and settings

so, here are the smitfiles test, ewido, and HJT logs. I'm assuming I will at least be repeating these steps (or a modified variant) again.

Please disable SpybotSD’s protection, as it may hinder the removal of the infection. You can enable it after you're clean.

Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
Check yes to next window.
Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
Click on Resident icon.
Uncheck Teatimer box and/or Uncheck Resident.
Click Allow Change box.

Howdy,
we're getting there..... the HJT log file looks much better, although there are a few that I am wondering about... also, see the Panda scan log file - i bet the spyware that it mentions is related to the fact that I still dont have my desktop back yet :-) (it appears to be repeated under many of the old admin profiles XP loaded while my profile was corrupted).
