[Scouser55]

A new browser is opening directing me to various sites (winfixer.com being common). I have run adaware, spybot and tweaknow - all with no success. Can anyone help please? Here is my log.

Thanks for this advice. I couldn't find any sign of Sysmap.exe in the C:\Windows|system32 folder in safe mode and so could not delete what I couldn't find. Other stuff went though. Here is the new log file.
Let's hope this has stopped the hijacking

Thanks once again. The brower does not seem to be being hijacked now. Do you have any idea how this infection occured? I have a firewall, F secure anti virus, adaware and spybot search and destroy. I am normally very careful about what I download and am surprised that this happened without me noticing. Is it associated with another package?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE run your anti virus, when you get the all clear
restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point.
this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the nasties reinstalled again.

Then

Go to TOOLS\INTERNET OPTIONS. and delete all TEMP INTERNET FILES


Download CCLEANER


then run the scan under the windows tab.


then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.


Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.


Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit [red]http://www.windowsupdate.com[/red] regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.


Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. you should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Thank you. I have 'Backweb' as part of the F-secure anti virus and so it updates new definitions everyday. So I am as secure there as I can be. I also manually run Adaware and Spybot search and destroy (neither picked up this as a problem). What is the teaTimer option - do I set this from within Spybot?
Thanks for your advice on IE - I have never altered anything here and so well be at risk. I will alter these.
I use the Firewall provided by Windows - would I be more secure with something else? Does it have its limitations?

Then boot up in SAFE MODE

Then navigate to and delete these files\folders in BOLD

then reboot and post a fresh Hijackthis log from PC2.

you need to get a real firewall, the xp firewall is as much use as a chocolate teapot.
it only monitors traffic in one direction.

SYGATE FIREWALL. is free and easy to set up.

your log is clean.

sygate uses a lot less system resourses, and zone alarm isn't as user friendly imho.

but it's your call.

DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE run your anti virus, when you get the all clear
restart your system restore.(same page).then create a new restore point :-

click START\ALL PROGRAMS\ACCESSORIES\SYSTEM TOOLS\SYSTEM RESTORE. click on "create new restore point"
click on NEXT and follow the prompts.

this is to ensure that if you have to do a system restore in the future that you don't get all the nasties reinstalled again.

Then

Go to TOOLS\INTERNET OPTIONS. and delete all TEMP INTERNET FILES

Download CCLEANER


then run the scan under the windows tab.


then DEFRAG your C:\ drive.

to help speed up your system.

then let us know how the computer is running.

Hi. It has taken me a little while to do all the things you suggetsed on 3 PC's. The virus scan takes a long time to run. All I have to do now is install sygate.
However on the main PC (whilst trying to put in a clean restore point) my virus scanner picked up a trojan which it cannot disinfevt/delete or rename. Another trojan detection package I have does not pick this up either, nor spybot or adaware - so I reluctant to make a restore point if this is a problem. However i am not sure if it is as the file referred to is from an old outlook mail. I recall it was a spoof mail pretending to be e-Bay and whilst the linkk was clicked - no password info etc was posted. Realising it was a spoof - it was deleted straight away and e-Bay informed (a copy was therefore kept in 'sent' mail - which has since been deleted. However F-secure is picking this up and when I navigate to the location - it does not appear to be there - so I cannot manually delete it.
Here is the detail and any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried showing hidden files, then looking for it. :-

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

then have a look for that file.

I of course meant 5 files! Each one individually scanned by the same virus checker and all clean. So i guess none of these are the right ones.
