Hello-
Perhaps this isn't really an appropriate place to pose such an inquiry...
unless a digital camcorder qualifies as a type of computer...

I just got a JVC miniDV camcorder, and (of course) the manual warns agains using generic replacement/alternative batteries rather than original manufacturer's because of "patented and other proprietary technology" without which "damage to the internal charging circuitry" can result.

Is this actually so, or simply a means for assuring their own products get purchased and prices paid?

As I say... if this isn't the place for such an inquiry... Sorry :tazz: .
If so... thanks ;) .

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. You are right, not really the proper place for this but having a Canon mini cam I will offer my humble opinion. During the warranty period I suggest observing their precautions. Should you have any issues during the warranty period and submit a claim, they could claim you voided the warranty by using 'generic' batteries. In reality, as long as the battery has the same interface and output, the cam corder won't know the difference! There are some good video camera forums out there. I used to have a bookmark for one but lost it last time firefox dumped my bookmarks. Do a google search and you will find some.
