Following your guide to clean up our system - scanning, cleaning, and scanning again! Just now realizing that I have not installed SP2 on my system - so I want to do that but the cautions mentioned in the guide have me worried!

Is there a way to make certain my system is free from malware BEFORE I start down the SP2 path?

Currently running the TrendHousecall scan - if it looks good, shall I go for it?

First, download and install CleanUp! but do not run it yet.
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

Please download Ewido Security Suite (do NOT run it yet!)

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be a big E icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will prompt you to update click the OK button
• The program will now go to the main screen
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Click on Start
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed
• After the updates are installed, exit Ewido

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Once in Safe Mode:

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

If Cleanup! asks if you want to reboot, click NO

Open Ewido

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan
• Let the program scan the machine

While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean the first infected file it finds. Choose "remove", then put a check next to "Perform action on all infections" in the left corner of the box so you don't have to sit and watch Ewido the whole time. Click OK.

Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report

• Click Save report
• Save the report to your desktop
• Exit Ewido

Reboot into normal mode.

Then, please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

*Save the results from ActiveScan!

Copy the results from ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the report from Ewido.

Close HiJackThis.

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\System32\squczyi.exe
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "Yes".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files - option.

Using Windows Search function, locate the following files and delete if present;

**Re-hide hidden files option you modified earlier**

Let's clear out your restore points now.

Disable System Restore;

1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Check the "Turn off System Restore"
5. Click Apply. An message shows up.
6. Click "Yes" to do this.
7. Confirm with "Ok".

Reboot.

Enable System Restore;

1. Click Start.
2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
3. Click the System Restore tab.
4. Uncheck the "Turn off System Restore" check box.
5. Click Apply, and then click "OK".

Here's some tips for future to prevent spyware;

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed. (My favourite)
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program <= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kaspersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall <= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser <= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox.

http://www.windowsupdate.com to get Service Pack 2 which is a critical update to get.. It'll increase your protection. Apply it - reboot. After that, apply ANY available critical updates. Reboot.

Hi - ok, system booted up great, but when I access internet explorer, Norton Antivirus gives the following alert:

High Risk - Norton AntiVirus has detected a virus on your computer.

Object Name C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HCLEAN32.exe
Virus Name Trojan Horse
Action Taken Unable to repair this file.

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
• Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\HCLEAN32.exe
• Double click on that file.
• HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "Yes".

Let the system reboot. See if you can run the following online scan;
Panda Activescan

If you do, please let it fix anything it can and post the results here.

Btw, that Panda scan usually gives the results to the site where you launch the scan. The actual scanning window closes when finished.. So let it scan but don't shutdown your browser while doing it.

HELP! I can't find HCLEAN.EXe anywhere on my system

Ok, I'm trying Panda again - it's scanning now.

I went to the site, selected Scan Now and then selected Local Disks. It's going thru the scan, but if performs like it did last night, the window will go away when it is done. Do I need to go back to the site to find results?

Open windows right now are this one on geekstogo.com and the panda ActiveScan.
