This is mostly just some information for people with this virus and are struggling with it...I just spent 2 days of trying to clean my computer of the "Hey, is this you?" virus that's spreading over msn. It's also called the Chode-C, Chode-A, etc. virus. It doesn't allow you to use HiJack This, you can't use Start>Run "regedit" or Start>Run msconfig. It disables your Norton, And doesn't allow you to go to any antivirus sites. I think it starts with how it installs an undeletable csrss.exe into your C:\WINDOWS\System32 folder and also creates a hidden, random named folder in System32 with something to do with it... I deleted the folder (mine was named rnxjfgg) and emptied the recycling bin. It also sticks some [bleep] into your Registry... which you cannot access anymore because this program closes the window within 0-2 seconds. I found out how to view pages from google that were access denied by clicking on the [ cached ] button by it. I found out you can go into C:\WINDOWS\System32\devices\etc and open 'hosts' with notepad and delete all the things in it and save it. That will allow you to go to any internet explorer page. Uhm... yeah, I didn't have HiJack This on my computer before I had this virus so Whenever I tried to download it, it just closes the program (like the registry editor). Um. So I downloaded it from Shareaza and It worked for like 2 seconds and then closed. Anyways... Yeah, I went to bed at 9am :tazz: .

I left the computer on because I was afraid if I restart, I would have to do the process all over again because csrss.exe is a startup program apparently. SO. I woke up, came onto the computer, messed around, and hey, I can access my registry. I can access the System Config Utility, I can access everything, I guess I disabled it or something. So, I went into my System Configuration Utility. I unchecked the 3 csrss.exe's in the Startup tab. It asked to restart but I was afraid to so I didn't. I read on some website that this virus sticks a folder as HKCR\Chode. I deleted it... And a folder in HKCU\Software\Chode (I think). I deleted that also. What I don't know is how to make sure it's off my computer and it wont send itself to others on msn anymore. It is in Windows Task Manager under Processes, and it cant be removed... It is still in C:\Windows\System32\csrss.exe, protected file, cannot be deleted. How do I delete it. Yeah, I ran CleanUp for the first time and...
CleanUp! 4.0 recovered 457.9 MB of disk space from 23687 files.
CleanUp! finished on 08/06/05 17:30:36.

That's pretty [bleep] good. I'm going to do a HiJack this log and tell me if I still have something effing my computer.

Welcome UberMario to Geeks to Go!

Download Findlop by Metallica. Unzip it to your desktop.
Double click findlop.bat. It will open a notepad file.
Copy the content of that file and past it here in your reply.

***

please open Start> Run and type MSConfig in the 'Run' box. When the System Configuration Utility opens, go to the 'Startup Tab' and make sure there is a checkmark beside each entry. Then the general tab should have the "normal startup" option checked. REBOOT when asked to by Windows to complete the change

After completing the above please scan again with HJT and POST a new HJT log in here in this topic using 'Add Reply' to see what there is to clean.

That's my HJT log.
I doubt it would have added anything. Oh yeah, I checked 3 "csrss" files on the Startup tab.
Posted Image
4 windows popped up when I logged in saying something like "Cannot find C:\Windows\System32\rnxjfgg\csrss.exe" Because I deleted it. There this is a csrss.exe file in the ...\System32 folder but not in it's own folder. Oh, and if there is anything else that is malware or whatever, you should point that out. Thanks.

Let's start cleaning up.

You are running HijackThis from the Desktop.
Please create a new folder for it and move the program into the new folder.

***

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Run Ewido --- When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
***

Copy and paste the text from the box to an empty file in Notepad.
%systemdrive%
cd C:\WINDOWS\Tasks
attrib -r -s -h 8BBFE82D92488165.job

del AC03C1EC918074D0.job
del ACD9165E91868876.job
del ADDA917C91890490.job

Save the file:
name : remjob.bat
location: desktop
type : all types

Close Notepad.

Doubleclick remjob.bat on your desktop.

***

Open Windows Explorer.
We need to remove these folders:

c:\program files\logoju~1\ <= the foldername is an abbreviation
c:\documents and settings\marika\application data\logoju~1\
c:\ documents and settings\Mari - Ann\application data\logoju~1\
c:\ documents and settings\Mom & Myla\application data\logoju~1\

Close Windows Explorer when you are done.

***

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

***

Open HijackThis
Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.ktvguhcgf...xNbW/zWCAr.html

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.co...up1.0.0.8-2.cab

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running.
Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

***

Next, run Ewido again.
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
***

Finally, restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan..

Good luck on the other computer.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Glad I was able to help.
