I ran the Activescan and it didn't find anything:

Detected Disinfected
Virus 0 0
Spyware 0 0
Hacking Tools 0 0
Dialers 0 0
Security Risks 0 0
Suspicious files 0 0

Here's a new HJT log. Something is making my PC retain these entries, although I deleted most of the "bad" files some time ago. Autoruns shows them, but says "File Not Found" next to their entries.

Hey Excal,

I've tried to fix the items loophole directed me to, however, they won't leave! The entries seem fixed when I'm in safe mode but as soon as I reboot to normal they show up again. I ran Autoruns a few weeks ago and deleted all the strange files using explorer, but they still show up in Autoruns too with the tag "File Not Found". Anyway, here's a fresh HJT log:

You have numerous infections. We need to see if we can clean this up a bit. Something very important that you need to do is this: (even do it in safe mode if it comes up)

Please disable AdWatch, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.
To disable AdWatch:
  • Open AdAware SE.
  • Go to AdWatch User Interface.
  • Go to Tools and Preferences.
  • At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
  • Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
  • Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
  • Uncheck both options. You can enable these after resolving your problem.
  • Unless they are turned off they could interfere with the fix by HijackThis
Going to have you download some tools. If you already have them, just make sure they are updated. Thanks.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Download and install CleanUp! Here
*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.

We will use this program later.

THE FIX

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

  • When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

15. Reboot into normal mode and run the program CleanUp!

16. Download and unzip the hosts file from http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm to the folder that is right for your Windows version.
Acknowledge that you want to overwrite the hosts file that is present except if you were using the hosts file for sonmething usefull before this happened.
This often is true in corporate newtworks, if you are not sure ask the System Administrator.

17. If you do not have the Google Toolbar installed, you can delete this folder:
c:\program files\google

18. If you are running Windows XP SP2, copy the part in bold below into Notepad and save it as AUenabled.reg

Excal, I followed your instructions with the following exceptions:

1. Couldn't paste all the noted files into Killbox from the clipboard at once, so they were entered one at a time.
2. Did not perform steps 18 & 19. Security Center gave me a message stating it could not enable the Windows firewall. Is there a compatibility issue with the firewall I'm currently using - BlackIce?
3. Could not run the Activescan. I lost my (dialup) connection while the activex was downloading. I had run this scan before so didn't think I needed the download again...

My PC's running a little better but I still have some problems. I searched for the malicious files as you directed and can't find them! Here are the scans:

Yes, that's the new log. There was some improvement but you're right, not much. I'm going to do everything again just to be sure I didn't miss something. I'll run the activescan too. But let me know if you have something else for me to try. What's your opinion of the BlackIce firewall? I installed it after I had been infected... Thanks.

I personally don't like BlackIce,but thats My opinion :) when we get you cleaned up I will give you a few more free firewall programs that you can switch to if you like.

SOmething is protecting those entries, or reinstalling them. By the looks of your ewido log, my guess would be that they are being protected.

Do you have the discs to reinstall adwatch? Or the download link? My guess is its either Ewido or Adwatch thats protecting them. If you can uninstall adwatch, that would be great, but I also need you to uninstall Ewido, then do the fix over again. (without the ewido of course...lol)

Please let me know

Thanks,

Uninstalling Adaware & Ewido seems to have helped. Got rid of some entries, but others remain. Should I uninstall Spybot? Here's the latest HJT log:

Excal,

Not sure exactly what happened but I decided to run HJT after reading some mail and my log looks great! I re-booted just to make sure I things were better and it looks good. PC seems to be running well. Since I don't know what happened, presumably things could change again but here it is:

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected
