Hi Pieter,

I posted one in my very first message, that's how we got started.

Not much has changed since then. I got rid of S3k (& didn't reinstall it), and I'm using MS Antispyware again since removing it made no difference.

Cheers,

Brian

I'm sorry. I obviously lost track of this thread.

Can you give me a short recap of what you can and can't do online?

Hi Pieter,

No probs.

Can't get a save file dialog for notepad, Object Edit or Internet Explorer (& probably other programs). Object Edit just ignores the request to save file, Notepad complains about lack of memory, IE says 'the web page could not be saved' when trying to save pages, and if you respond to a download request with 'save file', no dialog box appears to choose the location. Word and other office programs do allow you to save files.

Cheers,

Brian

OK. Now I understand why I made you download HijackThis with XMLHTTP.

We established that the problem Windows is reporting is not the real one.

We will change the script to download the SP2 file for English OS.

This will be the new one:

Dim BinaryData
Dim xml
set xml = CreateObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")
xml.Open "GET","http://download.micr...-ENU.exe",False
xml.Send
BinaryData = xml.ResponseBody
Const adTypeBinary = 1
Const adSaveCreateOverWrite = 2
Dim BinaryStream
set BinaryStream = CreateObject("ADODB.Stream")
BinaryStream.Type = adTypeBinary
BinaryStream.Open
BinaryStream.Write BinaryData
BinaryStream.SaveToFile "C:\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe", adSaveCreateOverWrite
Dim WshShell
set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
'WshShell.Run "cnt.pl", 0, false

Run that file and wait untill the download is complete.
The doubleclick C:\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe to initiate the update.

I'm hoping that any missing or corrupted file will be replaced during the update.

Be patient during the download. The file is a whopping 266 MB :tazz:

Hi Pieter,

I have the SP2 on cd - I'd ordered it from MS but never installed it.

I'm a little concerned at what might happen if it gets part way through the installation and decides it can't continue without trashing my settings and deleting my outlook mailbox (for starters). I've had that occur during a 'repair' installation before, and perhaps I'm being paranoid but the SP2 installation seems to be of a similar level of change (?)

Isn't there anything else I can do?

This problem is very annoying, but the rest of my system is operating.

If that's the only option I'll give it some thought, but either way it'll have to wait until I have time to fix any damage that occurs, as I can't be wthout my PC at present.

Cheers,

Brian

I have no idea where to look really for a more finetuned solution.

Never seen this problem or anything like it before and with no clue about how it started, a general repair (by upgrading) is the only ghood advice I can come up with.
