I've got problems with the virus PSGuard and it keeps appearing in the system tray. I've followed the instructions in the introduction and both CWShredder and spybot say that my computer is not infected. The introduction also mentions to post the report of the ewido scan but ewido is only compatible for 2000 and XP and i'm running on ME so i only have the HJT log here it is:

Sorry we weren't quicker :tazz:

Are you familiar with http://www.tinyOnline.com.hk. This site is set as your default hope page and wasn't sure if you were aware of it.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PSGuard] C:\Program Files\PSGuard\PSGuard.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [intell32.exe] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\intell32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Srv32 spool service] C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe
O16 - DPF: {3A7FE611-1994-4EF1-A09F-99456752289D} (WildTangent Active Launcher) - http://install.wildt...iveLauncher.cab

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\System\spoolsrv32.exe

9. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

10. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

11. Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

12. Run the program CleanUp!

13. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

14. Please post the Active scan log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

I couldn't do step 11 because I can't really follow after going to control panel.
I also can't do step 13 (running pand active scan) as it says the site has been moved unavailable and hence, i don't have an Active scan log. There were also some problems which occured when I was deleting the files through ad-aware; it mentions that they were unremovable because they were running and will have them deleted in the next reboot, but the same problem existed even after I ran ad-aware after rebooting my comp. The following are the smitfiles.txt log and HiJackThis log:

Please download wininet.dll from this link:

http://www.dll-files...s.shtml?wininet

Put it in the Program Files folder.

Please download the Killbox.

Please run Killbox.
  • Select "Replace on Reboot".
  • Enter C:\Windows\system\wininet.dll right below the words "full path of file delete"
  • right below that, enter C:\program files\wininet.dll
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click here to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..
  • Let the system reboot.
let me know how this goes.

A few questions for you.

Did you put the new wininet.dll in program files folder?

Was there any problem with the replace on reboot portion?

Its the same problem your having?

Yes, I put it in the program files folder. Well, actually, the first time, i forgot to unzip the file and I ran Killbox and rebooted, so I don't think it replace anything. I then unzipped it and did the procedure again.

There wasn't any problems with the replace on reboot except I never got the message that you expected - (Click "No" at the Pending Operations)

Yes, it's the same problem. It starts up everytime I start windows - (seen in the taskbar)

This is not what you've asked me but I see a folder "!Submit" in my C: drive containing a wininet.dll file, don't know if that means anything, but hope it'll help.

they came out with a new version of smitrem, i want to see if it will make a diffrence. Can you please delete the old smitrem and then redownload it from the same link as before. After you do that, make sure you run it in safe mode, then post the smitrem.txt.

Thanks,
