Okay, I am yet another psguard victim... It installed itself two days ago while my boyfriend was using internet. It put a black ad-like background on my desktop and had a red icon in the tray that would pop up every five minutes to tell me my computer had been infected. When I go to control panel and click on display, it only shows two of the tabs, Screen Saver and Settings. I managed to change my background to a lighter picture so I could at least see the icons again, but I'm guessing from what I've read on other posts that it's still there even though I can't see it. It also changed my startpage to www.bestweblinks.com and won't let me use any search engines such as yahoo and msn. I can't even check my email at yahoo. I ran Trend Housecall Spyware removal that night, but it was still there. So I read up on it and found other people with the same problem. I ran Cleanup, Ad-aware (which would freeze in the middle of the scan), CWShredder, Spybot, Ewido (I saved the log), Panda (which scanned, but would not show me the results), and Hijack This (I saved the log). I'm running on very little sleep right now, so bear with me if I seem spaced-out :tazz: ! Here is my log from Ewido:

Hi Kayla,

I moved your thread to the proper forum.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.
If it still doesn't run.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and surf to the Panda ActiveScan and do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

I rebooted in safe mode, but HJT was not found on the desktop. I did a search, but could not find the program to run it. All I could find was the log that I had saved from it the first time I ran it. Am I doing something wrong?

Are you logged in as Kayla Patterson ?
If you login under another account (Administrator) it might not show up on the desktop.

If it's really gone download it again and save it in a new folder as explained here:
http://home.planet.n...xplanation.html
Do it in a folder that is accessable for everyone (for example Program Files)

A few things Panda didn't find worth deleting.

Do these manually and if they all go without resistance then consider yourself clean.

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\stlb2.xml
C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\f3initialsetup1.0.0.8-2.inf
C:\PROGRAM FILES\Power Scan <= entire folder

Please do have a look at my site about removing and preventing spyware.
