I have run Norton Antivirus 2005 and it found the desktophijack virus, so I went to their site and followed the instructions. I did not find the registry entries I was supposed to. Did a search of this virus and came here . Where do I start, since my desktop if full of Symantec sending emails?

Thanks

Welcome to GTG.

How is it sending the emails? Does it log you to the internet?

OK, you must do this first:
Please read the first link in my signature and follow the steps outlined there. When you are ready, post the HijackThis log here.

If you can, get those programs from another computer and burn it on a CD. Boot this computer into Safe Mode and install those programs in Safe Mode. Then run their scans and fix what they find. After running those programs (Ad-aware, Spybot, CWShredder and Microsoft Antispyware), restart your computer and go back to Normal Mode. Run a HijackThis scan in Normal Mode and post that log here.

Hopefully after all those scanning and cleaning the emails will ease down a little by then :tazz:

OK, for this next step, I want you to leave your computer on until I can get (you a fix so you can run it). So find a convenient time to do this and when you are ready, do this:

Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

regedit /e c:\1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
regedit /e c:\2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run"
copy c:\1.txt+c:\2.txt c:\3.txt
del c:\1.txt
del c:\2.txt
notepad c:\3.txt
del c:\3.txt
del delete.bat

Save the file as "delete.bat". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it. Post that notepad file that just opened here.

OK, this is going to be a long one... Take your time on this and read it over beforehand to see if you have any questions. I will try to help you get rid of this in a few tries (maybe less if possible). Otherwise, we will have to do this in mulitple replies/postings.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab:
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm and then click OK.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"WildTangent CDA"=-
"xp_system"=-
"PSGuard"=-
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"RecordNow!"=""
"NVIEW"="rundll32.exe nview.dll,nViewLoadHook"
"MSMSGS"="\"C:\\Program Files\\Messenger\\msmsgs.exe\" /background"

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Double click on it and choose Yes to merge it. You may delete the file afterwards.

Make sure to close any open browsers. Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:

WildTangent - This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all. They collect information about you and your usage. We recommend uninstalling it.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Download KillBox http://www.greyknigh...spy/KillBox.exe. Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. Copy the below files and go back to KillBox. Go to File->Paste from Clipboard and then hit the button with a red circle and white X. Confirm to delete and when asked if you want to reboot, say no:

c:\windows\afxwryr.exe
c:\windows\apewfjs.exe
c:\windows\cyjvnqo.exe
c:\windows\dfjwgnb.exe
c:\windows\eoehcvi.exe
c:\windows\fkqmxvd.exe

c:\windows\jqbygab.exe
c:\windows\lgbrsqy.exe
c:\windows\qwloiln.exe
c:\windows\vbssrxa.exe
c:\windows\wllnigx.exe

Delete this folder if found -> C:\WINDOWS\inet20081\

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Download smitRem at http://noahdfear.gee.../click.php?id=1 and save the file to your desktop.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and read the Ewido setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee.../ewidosetup.htm. Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow the download and setup instructions at http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm. Otherwise, check for updates. Don't run it yet!

Download CleanUp! http://cleanup.stevengould.org/ (Alternate Link if main link don't work - http://www.greyknigh...spy/CleanUp.exe ) and install it. Don't run it yet.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

CleanUp! deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups. If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp!. Run CleanUp! and click on the Options button. Uncheck 'Scan local drives for temporary files'. Also uncheck those two Newsgroup entries if you don't want to delete them. Click OK and then click on the CleanUp! button. Let it run. After it's done, choose Yes to logoff.

Run the smitRem.exe tool you downloaded earlier. Follow the prompts on the screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

* Click on scanner.
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
* You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
* If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
* Do NOT select 'Perform action on all infections'.
* If you are unsure of any entry found, select none for now.
* When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
* Save the report to your desktop.

Close Ewido.

Next go to Control Panel->Display->Desktop->Customize Desktop->Web-> Uncheck 'Security Info' if present.

Reboot back into Windows and go to http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm to do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked. Save the scan log.

Then post the Panda log here along with the logs for HijackThis, smitfiles.txt and Ewido.

I had problems with smitRem.exe. Never did get it to run correctly, I guess.
Also, the Panda scan, I never could not get the save of the text file scan.
But I did post the other scans.
If I need to do anything else, let me know.
Thanks

What's wrong with smitRem? Any errors? How about Panda? Does it find anything though?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Restart your computer and boot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work. Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://srch-qus10.hpwis.com/

Try running smitRem.exe again. Save the log.

Delete the following Files/Folders (delete folders if no filename is specified) according to their directory (if none, just do a search for them) and delete them if they exist:

C:\windows\eoehcvi.exe
C:\WINDOWS\mm1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inet20081\
c:\windows\mxvjnqc.exe

Restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Save the log file and post it here along with the smitRem log if you can run it.

Give me this log also:

Please empty any Quarantine folder in your antivirus program and purge all recovery items in the Spybot program (if you use it) before running this tool.

Download the Mwav virus checker at http://www.mwti.net/antivirus/mwav.asp (Use Link 3)

1. Save it to a folder.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Double click the Mwav.exe file. This is a stand alone tool and NOT just a virus checker......so it won't install anything.
4. Select all local drives, scan all files, and press SCAN. When it is completed, anything found will be displayed in the lower pane.
5. In the Virus Log Information Pane......
Left click and highlight all the information in the Lower pane --- Use &CTRL C &on your keyboard to copy everything found in the lower pane and save it to a notepad file
*Note* If prompted that a virus was found and you need to purchase the product to remove the malware, just close out the prompt and let it continue scanning. We are not going to use this to remove anything...but to ID the bad files.

Once you copy that to a Notepad file...highlight the text and copy it here.
