Adware/PS Guard? [RESOLVED]

Hi there... I'm new here and hope you guys can help get this computer back to a useable state. It's really bugging me. Whenever we're using the Internet, we get these popups saying our system is infected and they want us to "buy" their removal tools etc. We have this annoying yellow yield type sign by the clock with a black exclamation point in it that blinks constantly also. When I click it, it takes me to various spyware removal sites... example: ps guard?

I've done everything listed to try before posting. Everything from Ewido, to downloading the AVG. Here are the results of the things ya'll suggested to post... Oh and yes I ran updates from Windows update as well.

Hi Sweet Hope and welcome to the Geeks to Go Forums.

My name is Trevuren and I will be helping you with your log.

1. If you haven't logged in go to Geeks to Go and do so. Then proceed to item a.

If you already have logged in, go directly to item a.

a. Click on My Controls at the top right hand corner of the window.
b. In the left hand column, click "View Topics"
c. If you click on the title of your post, you will be taken there

2. Also, while at the My Controls page, check the box to the right of your post and then scroll down.
.Where it says "unsubscribe" click the pull-down menu and select "immediate email notification"

3. Please DELETE your current HJT program from its present location.

4. Download and run the following HijackThis autoinstall program from Here HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

A. Close ALL windows except HJT

B. SCAN with HJT and SAVE LOG. (a notepad window will open with the log in it when you click Save Log) (Ctrl-A to'select all', Ctrl-C to 'copy')

C. POST the log in this thread using 'Add Reply' (Ctrl-V to 'paste')

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL WE CHECK THE LOG, AS MOST OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO THE FUNCTION OF YOUR COMPUTER

Umm.. I did what I was supposed to, no? Did I miss something, do something incorrectly?

When I went to Add/Remove Programs to uninstall Hijackthis, it said it was already gone? I couldn't find it, so I reinstalled from the link you gave me and now it's in it's own folder under Programs and there is an icon on the desktop.

First let me start off by telling you how sorry I am I didn't get back to you in a timely fashion. I just never received email notification of your response. There was a time, about 5 days ago when we were experiencing problems with our servers and this is when this must have occurred.

I will be treating your system for full PSGuard infection eventhough your signs may have lessened or totally disappeared. There are dangerous remnants of the infection undoubtedly left on your machine.

Download the following self-extracting file smitRem.exe and save the file to your DESKTOP.
- Double click the Smitrem.exe icon on your Desktop.
- Then click Run>Start and a Smitrem folder will apear on your desktop also.
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.
Update Ewido's definitions to the newest files.
DO NOT RUN IT YET
Install Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions.
- Ad-Aware SE Setup
- Update the definitions
- DO NOT RUN IT YET
REBOOT your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
- Restart your computer
- After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
- Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
- Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now open HJT, click SCAN and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Using Windows Explorer, please locate and DELETE the following files/folders (with all their content), if they are still present:

ALCXMNTR.EXE<===You will have to search for this one
C:\g.exe
Open the smitRem folder
- Double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool.
- Follow the prompts on screen.
- Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
NOTE:The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.
Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.
Run Ewido:
- Click on scanner
- Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
- NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
- You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
- If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
- DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
- If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
- When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
- Save the report to your desktop
- Close Ewido
Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.
REBOOT back into Normal Mode
Click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut
- Do a full system scan.
- Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Let me know if any problems persist.

Hi there & thanks for the explanation. I was wondering if I'd gotten lost in the shuffle.

Let's see.. I completed step one.

Step two: Panda scan takes me to "page cannot load". I went to PC world and tried to go thru there for Active Scan. Same thing. Cannot do it. "Page cannot load".

Step three thru six. Done

1. Your log is essentialy clean IF YOU ARE USING AOL. Are you?

2. So please list your remaining concerns other than you cannot get Panda and Active Scan to work. (You need to go through Internet Explorer for both, have cookies enacbled and your system set to run AvtiveX.

We do *not* use AOL, ever. As far as I know, we don't even have an AOL account.

I checked and cookies are enabled etc, and so are the ActiveX controls yet I still can't get to the page to run an active scan. I can run Housecall w/no troubles. Weird to me.

Thanks for your help just the same. At least that annoying yellow yield sign with the exclamation point is gone from by the clock now.

We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
Click the Extended tab.
Scroll down until you find the service.
===>AOL Connectivity Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Click Stop
Right-Click on the service.
Click on 'Properties'
Select the 'General' tab
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste AOL ACS in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMMON FILES\AOL<===Folder

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Also please describe AGAIN in detail what messages you receive at Panda & Active Scan
