WinPatrol 9.7
9th August 2005

New Startup Programs
Don't be surprised when you see new titles listed as Startup Programs!
WinPatrol has expanded the number of locations monitored as auto-run setup programs. The Spyware and Adware villains have found some of those undocumented locations in Windows and Scotty will now check them as well. WinPatrol will reset them back to the default Windows settings.
For the techies out there new locations included are:
# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Shell= Explorer.exe
# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Userinit.exe
New PLUS Startup Locations Monitored
WinPatrol has also expanded auto-startup locations internal to windows and more likely to be modified by experienced WinPatrol users. WinPatrol PLUS is required for this extended support.
WinPatrol monitors and can remove programs added to these locations if you're really sure they are dangerous.
# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ShellServiceObjectDelayLoad
Examples of OK programs include CDBurn, PostBootReminder, SysTray, WebCheck
# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\SharedTaskScheduler
Examples of OK programs include Browser preloader:UI Library, Component Categories cache daemon
# HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ShellExecuteHooks
Examples of OK programs include Browser preloader:Shell, Microsoft AntiSpyware Service Hook
100% Detections of the Top Spyware Threats
WinPatrol 9.7 has been tested against the top Spyware threats and Scotty got a score of 100. WinPatrol PLUS with R.I.D. has been further optimized to provide quick real-time detection of spyware threats and infiltrations on a Microsoft Windows based PC.
Less Frustration for repeating threats
Many threats come in pairs so that as soon as you remove one program another one just recreates it. The results have been repeated warnings by Scotty over and over again. WinPatrol now recognizes repeat offenders and offers alternate solutions to help users remove the stubborn infiltrations.
Buffer Overflow Security Added
WinPatrol 9.7 now uses newly developed Windows text functions provided by Microsoft to protect developers from security threats caused by hackers taking advantage of possible buffer overflow flaws.
New Standardized Setup Program
Many may ask why has WinPatrol tripled in size?
Well, WinPatrol hasn't grown but the size of our install/setup program is much larger than our previous versions. Unfortunately, while previous versions of wpsetup.exe were tiny it wasn't compatible with new 64-bit systems and many Windows NT based versions. What used to be our alternative setup is now our main setup program.
Additional International Help Support
BillP Studios has always been devoted to doing what we can to support users in other countries who would like to use their native language. Our volunteers have been great as localizing WinPatrol text. We can now support any language including new help files as they become available.
Tested with Microsoft Windows Vista Beta 1
Scotty is very happy running on the new Vista OS from Microsoft.
Bug Fixes and minor enhancements
    * Fixed text placement in File Type alert
    * Fixed File Type monitoring error when using Explorer to modify some file types.
    * Improved R.I.D. compatibility with other registry intensive programs.
    * Additional PLUS Info files added to the local knowledgebase for free users
