Hi, I am experiencing big problems...I believe my father may have accidentally partially installed Anit-Virus Gold on to our machine...as a result we are now constantly getting a "Windows Installer" window that is "preparing to install"...this then in turn becomes "Norton Anti-Virus" and then gives the message that it is "unable to support the repair"...The system is shared between 2 users...my father has lost his desktop background AND the option to change or add a desktop background---where my side still has a functional background and the options are still available in the control panel. Another regular occurance is a blue screen "fatal error" message concerning the smitfraud trojan...I have gone through your steps and run the programs to clean the machine as instructed---however it seems the machine is still being hi-jacked by something...I have included the HJT scan results for your review, any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Close any other open windows and/or open browsers, making sure that only HiJackThis is running. Make sure that the above mentioned objects are all checked, then hit "Fix Checked".

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.

Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Launch Ad-Aware SE and click on the gear to access the Configuration menu. Please make sure that this setting is applied;

Click on Tweak => Cleaning engine => UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
Now do a Full System Scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• Clean anything it finds.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Run CleanUp! making sure to reboot!

Boot up into normal mode and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Hi Rawe---thanks so much, your fix has cleaned things up nicely, however I have experienced another pop-up from "Windows Installer" and the flashing yellow triangle with exclamation mark is still flashing at the bottom of the screen---sometimes including text to the effect that the computer is infected and I should click to seek anti-virus software....HOWEVER, the option to change desktop background has returned and the machine is running much better than it was...I am unsure if I scanned properly with Panda ActiveScan...here are the results you requested...please advise...I am also questioning if I used the smitRem.exe properly.......please get back to me.

Ok, looks like there's one thing SmitRem didn't take care of. Can you do the following;

Run CleanUp! and reboot into Safe Mode;

1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode;

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log to your next reply.

Then reboot into normal mode and post the SmitFiles.txt along with a fresh HiJackThis log.

Hi Rawe...I ran the SmitRem tool and sent you the generated log along with an updated HJT log...The machine is running much better and the flashing exclamation seems to be gone from the system tray--HOWEVER I am still getting the "Windows Installer--preparing to install" message popping up when the computer attempts to execute a function...this small window then converts into a "Norton AnitVirus 2005" window with the message "Norton AntiVirus 2005 does not support the repair feature, please unistall and reinstall"...I am typically able to continue on and perform the tasks that I wish---however this constant pop-up is very annoying and obviously a sign that something is still not operating properly. Thank you so far for all the , please review the new logs and let me know what I can do to eliminate the "Windows Installer".

I'm not very good with those problems, but I can say for sure I'm pretty sure what it means. Since it says it doesn't HAVE a repair feature, I would guess it has some problem with ITSELF. Let's first just make sure your PC is clean, then we'll figure out something. I would suggest uninstall/complete deletion of Norton, then a fresh reinstall after we get you clean.

I seem to be having a problem using Panda Activescan...I get as far as the screen that indicates it is "Scanning My Computer" but then it just seems to sit there in limbo---perhaps I am not setting it up right???? First check your current critical updates from Windows Update. If there is ANY available ones, install them and reboot. If not, let it be.

Can you do the following;

Click "Start", Run and type in; MRT
Click "Ok". When a window pops up, click "Next". Let it scan and let me know of the results in your next reply.

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the configure button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
• Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
• Click on the button "Save list"

1 thing I noticed.. Your SpyBot is outdated.

Do the following steps in order to upgrade;

1. Undo immunization
2. If SDHelper and TeaTimer are enabled, deactivate them first.
3. If Opera Browser is installed, de-select protection for Opera Immunity
4. Uninstall old version of Spybot S&D

Save it as remove.reg to your desktop.
Locate the remove.reg and double-click it. When Windows asks you to merge with the registry, hit YES.

Reboot,
download & install the latest version here;

Launch the program.. Update it.. Search for problems and remove anything it finds.
Reboot.

If you still have problems.. Post the details.. I'll get someone to look at this from the tech peoples of the site and we'll see if they have ideas.

Rawe---you'll have to excuse my stupidity, but I have no idea where to find SDHelper or TeaTimer or Opera Browser.....I checked through SpyBot....but did not see anything remotely like that.....I'm lost on this one.

Launch SpyBot -> Immunize -> Undo immunization & Uncheck the box below it if checked. (IF you have Opera installed, there will be third box checked too - but I guess you don't have it installed, you don't have the option.)

Go to the topmenu, you will see menu named "Mode". Click on it and click "Advanced Mode".

Click "Tools" at the lower corner, and disable the resident IE guard (By unchecking the checkbox next to it).

Exit SpyBot and proceed with the removal from the registry.
