Hi, I posted earlier, but in the mean time have found something that I needed to clear up. on my firewall page, under exceptions, I did have aol and aim, but not ie or moxilla. Could this have caused me to be able to access my aol but not the internet on a seperate browser?

Yes. It would have allowed aol to make a connection to the internet but it would have stopped ie and firefox from making them.
