What I know at this point:

Earlier today the system was infected with psguard.
Removal with ewido & spybot seemed to be going okay.
Spybot reported being unable to remove a few files due to files in use and asked to run again on startup. Chose okay.

Since then the system will not start up, gets to 'Welcome' screen & hangs.
Booting into Safe Mode results in an hour glass when the cursor is over the start button. Double clicking or right clicking an icon doesn't do anything.

Attempting a repair installation which proceeded to 'installing devices' 35 minutes to go and the system is once again hung.

I would appreciate any suggestions on this one . . .

I've tried the repair existing installation a couple times now. It reaches the installing windows level with 39 minutes to go, works down to 35 minutes and hangs up there during the installing devices.

It may be time to do a clean install . . . . .

I'm having the exact same problem: Doing a XP Repair installation hangs at "Installing Devices", 35 minutes remaining.

Did you find a solution, or did you have to resort to a clean install?

I did an 'over the top' install which didn't hang at 35 minutes but still left remnants of the psguard. So I wiped the disk clean & took it from the top.
