Hello,

First of all, thank you for helping me! I looked around on your website and completed all of the steps that you said to complete. I am still receiving a message from my Norton AntiVirus program that says that Norton has detected a virus on my computer, object name: C:\WINDOWS\system32\WININET.dll , virus name: W32.Desktophijack , Action taken: unable to repair this file , Action taken: Access to the file was denied. I have run the Norton virus scan. It will not let me delete or clean the virus, but it does quarantine it. However, I am still receiving this virus alert (high risk) message from Norton every time I start up my computer. When I click OK, it just comes back up over and over again (although the message alternates between having "system32" in all lowercase or all capital letters.

As I stated, I have followed all of the instructions listed on your website, including running hijack this. Here is my hijack this log. Thank you so much for your help!

I see you’re using Norton for anti-virus protection. In your HijackThis log I also see traces of MacAfee - So if this is something you installed at one time but no longer use, I suggest you uninstall MacAfee by going through Add/Remove programs.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.


Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

I see you already have Ewido Security Suite – make sure it’s set up according to the instructions below

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

• Restart your computer

• DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
• If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

OK, I messed up. I read the Ewido instructions (which walked me through running the scan) before I read "do NOT run a scan yet" in your instructions. I am sorry for not reading all of the directions before proceeding... What should I do now since I already ran an Ewido scan? Should I uninstall the program and reinstall it and then proceed with the directions as you stated? Please advise. Thank you so much for your help!

Not a big deal - you didn’t hurt anything. Continue on with the instructions (when instructed, run Ewido again in Safe Mode). When you include the Ewido log in your next post, make sure it’s the one you ran in Safe Mode. Let us know if you have any questions.

Hip Hip HOOORRRRRAAAYYYYYY! I think I'm going to have to change my username because I am not frustrated anymore! Thank you so much for helping me!!!! You are brilliant!!!!! High praise to you!!!!!

I ran all of the things you said to run but when I was in safe mode I realized that I couldn't find smitRem on the desktop. So I just did everything else and saved that last smitRem step for today. I was still getting my virus message when I logged on but after running smitRem in safe mode it said that I had a problem on my wininet.dll file? Something like that. It went to some back up drive or something to get another copy of the file and replaced the bad one. I had my fingers crossed when I restarted the computer and so far, no virus message! I think I am definitely in the clear now. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!! I greatly appreciate all that you did to help fix my computer! Let me know if I still need to post those logs.

Things are looking good.

Because things were run a little out of order, please do the following scans again and post the logs just to make sure your system is clean:

Reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer

OK, thanks again for all of your help. I tried completing the next steps to show you the logs you want to see. For some reason I cannot find my ewido scan log that I did last night... Now when I open the ewido program it says my 14 day trial version has expired. Anyway, I will post the other logs...

Also, the other day I had a pop up window come up that said:

"Norton Internet Security

I chose to block once. The message came up twice and I chose block once each time. Does this have something to do with the problems I was having? If it comes up again should I say block always? Nothing else happened after I hit block once - my computer still did what I needed it to do.

As far as the Norton Popup regarding Microsoft Generic Host Process for Win32 Services is attempting to access the internet, I would select ‘Permit Always (recommended)’

Let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)1. Turn off System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Restart your computer.

3. Turn ON System Restore.On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:

• How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
• How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.

Prevention Programs:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
• Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
• IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
• Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.

Other necessary Programs:

• AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
• Firewall<= A firewall is definitely a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
• More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.
