I was really hoping that somebody here could help me with this problem I have been dealing with today. Yesterday when I connected to the internet I got this popup regarding Winfixer. I didn't dowload it at first but it came again a couple of times again and I accidentally downloaded it.

I googled the name and found www.winfixer.com and it looked like a good program at first but I decided to double check it and went to this site and was wondering if somebody could help me. I ran such programs as Spybot - Search & Destroy, Spyware Blaster, Ad-Aware SE Personal and I used my anti-virus program (Trend Micro Internet Security) to scan my computer. I also ran Hijack This since people which had the same problem here did that and I saved the logfile.

Here is the logfile from Hijack This:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1
Scan saved at 09:39:55, on 11.8.2005

Hello Lobbi and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which may not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have quite a mixture of malware and Trojans, including Bube, that need to be eradicated. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep. Are you, or your ISP in Iceland?

I note that you are running HijackThis from Desktop; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

The VX2 infection on your PC is confirmed.

Close any programmes you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Please answer my question to you also.

Well here are the logs, first is the l2mfix log and then there is the HijackThis log. I'm sorry I didn't notice the question earlier. I am not sure what this ISP means, but yes I am in Iceland.

Hello again Lobbi

Thanks for the information. Actually ISP stands for Internet Service Provider, I apologise for my use of jargon to a person who uses English as a second language.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

Killbox by Option^Explicit
CWShredder
CCleaner
Ewido Security Suite
cwsserviceemove.reg file

Now please install CWShredder, and run it. Click Check For Update, then Fix and then OK followed by Next, let it fix everything it asks about

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Install Ewido Security Suite.
  • Install Ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
    • You will need to update Ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates
Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:

Safe Mode

Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The programme will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
Now that the updates have been installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with Ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If Ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"

*In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.

C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll

*Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

*Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt..

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, Analyze, Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and I will take another look.

There is a little problem, I can't install CWShredder. I have been trying it for about two hours now without any result. When I double-click it the computer freezes. Do you have any idea what could be wrong?

Hello Lobbi

I'm sorry, but I don't know why you can't install it. Please carry on without it because I always hit that infection from two different angles, and the second fix should get it later.

Now I have done everything you told me to do except what I was supposed to do with CWShredder as you know. When I was using HijackThis I couldn't find the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Desktop Search] C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.c4tdownload.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.finefind.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.iframe.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.overpro.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.sp2admin.biz
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.ecweb.is (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.help.ec.is (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.menntavefurinn.is (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.verslo.is (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in Trusted Zone, should be Internet Zone

I also couldn't find the following when I was using Killbox:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\desktop.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\tsa\tsm2.exe
C:\WINDOWS\isrvs\mfiltis.dll

Anyways, here is the report from ewido and the new HijackThis log:

Congratulations! your new log is clean. :tazz: Just a little bit more to do to prevent further infection.

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programmes changing them. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
I recommend going to the following link and update as recommended by Microsoft. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer. Microsoft Update

Now that everything is fixed, I suggest that you consider getting these programmes to help keep the computer clean:

SPYWARE BLASTER - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer.
AD-AWARE PERSONAL – A fine free malware detector and removal programme
SPYBOT S&D – Excellent free spyware detector and removal programme
GOOGLE TOOLBAR - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
FIREFOX - Safer alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.
AVG ANTIVIRUS - Free antivirus programme if you currently are not using one.
ZONEALARM - Free firewall programme if you currently are not using one.

Remember to update these frequently.

Please note that whilst there is nothing wrong in having more than one spyware detector/prevention programmes for “on demand” scanning, having two or more antivirus systems is not recommended as they may well interfere with each other.

You may also want to read "How did I get infected in the first place" to learn how to better secure your computer.

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-Virus updated. ;)

Happy safe surfing Lobbi!

Thanks for all the help, if I have any problems in the future the first thing I will do is to check if you guys can help me with it.

I was wondering what I should do with all of those programmes I downloaded like Killbox. Should I keep them or is it ok to delete them?

Góđan daginn Lobbi

You may if you wish delete all of the tools we have used to help us, but some are very good and useful to keep.

Personally, I would keep Ewido for on demand scanning (once a week) and CCleaner (daily).

You are very welcome to the help.

I will leave this thread open for a few days in case of misfortune.

I think I will keep all of the programmes, just in case anything happens again and I need some help that would require these programmes.

I will scan my computer using Ewido and Ccleaner as you recommended.

Thanks for all the help!
