OK, I just completed the Trojan Hunter scan. One trojan was found and removed. One possible trojan was attached to an email and sent for analysis. I have to get some sleep now, have to go to traffic court this morning. C U tomorrow, GOD willing.
Peace be with you

Hi Trevuren;
Everything did not go exactly as planned.
Variances:
Trojan Hunter exposed one possible trojan (emailed, awaiting disposition) and one trojan that was eliminated
Panda did not remove any reported viruses! Panda did provide the enclosed logfile (of unremoved problems):

Incident Status Location

Also Panda wouldn't run with my Mozilla Firefox- I had to switch to Iinternet Exlorer
.
AD-Aware SE quarantined 50 items.

I did not download another Cleanup program- I clicked on the Cleanup Icon on my desktop from previous post and clicked on the cleanup button- I didn't see the screen for choosing defaults or the Slide Bar.

We have a couple of post to go still

.We want to stop, disable and delete an added service (023)

A. To stop a service and set to 'disabled'
  • Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK
  • Click the Extended tab.
  • Scroll down until you find the service.
    ===>Windows VisFx Components
  • Click once on the service to highlight it.
  • Click Stop
  • Right-Click on the service.
  • Click on 'Properties'
  • Select the 'General' tab
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'
  • Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'
The service is now stopped and disabled.

B. We will now delete the service:

1. Open HJT

2. Click on Config>>Misc Tools>>Delete an NT Service

3. Copy/Paste Windows VisFx Components in the space provided and click OK

4. The program will ask you to REBOOT --- Accept

5. REBOOT into SAFE MODE

6. Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following file (if it still is present):

C:\WINDOWS\eoaasvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\imloader.exe

7. REBOOT back into Normal Mode

8. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Hi Trevuren;
This time I was able to find and remove eoaasvc.exe and imloader.exe, although imloader manifested as imloader class. Here is the current HJT file:

1. Backup the registry by going to Start>Run> and type "regedit" without the quotes. Then on the file menu choose ‘export’ in XP. Export the file to your Desktop.

If a restore of the registry is required in case of emergency, just click on the exported regfile on your desktop, and answer YES to the question whether you want to merge this file with the registry. Wait until you get a message saying something like Merge Successfull.

2. Launch Notepad, and copy/paste everything in the codebox below into the new document, including the word "Regedit4". Go up to "File Save As" and click the drop-down box to change the "Save As Type" to "All Files" and save it to your desktop as fixme.reg.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Chp.CallThrough]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Chp.CallThrough.1]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{6585E5B4-4D2A-4A1D-A219-4102C64BA999}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{A771FB97-B13E-46E2-973A-1CF0B693D1BC}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{D962EF38-5FB0-4761-8638-C86F085E25E6}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{8427BD70-5444-46CE-B15D-19E9CB49DF64}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\application/octet-stream]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/webviewhtml]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/xml]

3. Locate fixme.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?". Answer Yes and wait for a message to appear similar to Merged Successfully.

4. Reboot your computer.

3. Finally, run HijackThis, click SCAN, produce a LOG and POST it in this thread for review.

Regards,

Trevuren

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order in which they are mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
  • First we need to make all files and folders VISIBLE:
    • Go to start>control panel>folder options>view (tab)
    • Choose to "show hidden files and folders,"
    • Uncheck the "hide protected operating system files" and the "hide extensions for know file types" boxes.
    • Close the window with ok
  • Please RUN HijackThis.
. Click the SCAN button to produce a log.

  • Place a check mark beside each one of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - (no file)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SNPSTD2] C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd2.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sysnet] C:\DOCUME~1\BUSCOM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sysnet.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [qisnenc] C:\WINDOWS\qisnenc.EXE
    O16 - DPF: lass414 - https://onlinegames2...ses/lass414.cab
    O16 - DPF: {3AF4DACE-36ED-42EF-9DFC-ADC34DA30CFF} (PatchInstaller.Installer) - file://D:\content\include\XPPatchInstaller.CAB

  • Now with all the items selected, and all windows closed except for HJT, delete them by clicking the FIX checked button. Close the HijackThis window.

  • Reboot Your System in Safe Mode

How to use the F8 method to Start Your Computer in Safe Mode

    • Restart the computer.
    • As soon as BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until the Advanced Options menu appears.
    • Use the arrow keys to select the Safe mode menu item
    • Press Enter.
  • Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and DELETE them (if they are present):

    C:\WINDOWS\qisnenc.EXE
    C:\WINDOWS\vsnpstd2.exe
    C:\DOCUME~1\BUSCOM~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sysnet.exe
    D:\content\include\XPPatchInstaller.CAB

  • Exit Explorer, and REBOOT BACK INTO NORMAL MODE

  • Finally, RUN Hijackthis again and produce a new HJT log. Post it in the forum so we can check how everything looks now.
Regards,

Trevuren

I used the search button from the start key (with the little dog), I couldn't find Windows Explorer. The search turned up files a little different from the description you provided- I deleted them anyway.
qisnenc.EXE was qisnenc.EXE-3450D4D9.pf
vsnpstd2.exe showed up as 40KB Application and a 10Kb File
My D drive is a cd drive, but I still searched the hard drives "c" and "f" for XPPatchInstaller.CAB; it was not present.
Here's the current HJT Log.

Your log looks good. If you have no more malware-related problems that you are aware of, just give me the OK and we can start the final but essential cleanup procedures.

Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN

There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.

2. Cleanup the leftovers. Download CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

3. Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:

TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
  • Left click on "System Restore Tab"
  • Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Left click on "Apply"
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE
  • Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
  • Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Thank you, thank you, thank you
Trevuren, what started all this in the first place was my attempt to update my Norton SystemWorks 2002 subscription. Symantec informed me the 2002 version was no longer supported, and I needed the current version. I immediately got NSW 2005 from Sam's Club and while trying to install it started getting hammered with adware about my protection! After installing NSW, with help from overseas phone techs, the problems persisted, and phone support didn't help, (language barrier).
My friend had the same problem with her pc. After hours of back and forth conversations with support techs on the phone we got her NSW 2002 unintalled and she opted for PCTools Spyware Doctor. It seemed to work on her machine (Win 2000).
To make a long story short, I now have PCTools' Spyware Doctor and Registry Mechanic already installed on my machine. Of course they didn't help me then, but do you think I can go with them now?
Peace be with you

ABSOLUTELY NOT

If you can't afford to pay fo an AV, AVG7 FREE is an alternative. A free Firewall can be found in Zone Alarm. There is a free version which I use.

I cannot recommend a product but I can tell you that I use Kaspersky myself but don't tell anyone. :tazz: I don't get it free or even at a discount. It is a workhorse.

The other programs you mentioned are good but for other purposes. You could look into A Squared which can be a free anti-trojan program and don't forget Ewido which can still be used even after the trial period has expired. Remember Ad-Aware which is also free. You can be very well protected even on a very low budget as long as you remember to update the definitions and run the programs at least once a week.

Good Luck Trevuren
