[Laptop Boy]

I was surfing the web looking for a piece of electronics in an online store. All of a sudden the screen went blue for half a second and it rebooted itself. The disc check came up and a bunch of items were "truncated".

This is the first time my pc has done this. What would cause this?

I sent the Microsoft report when requested after start up. The note said that a driver had shut it down.

Could it have been my firewall that did this? I have virus protection, maybe that was what crashed it.

Try this Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer, Click the System Icon. See if it shows the driver responsible for the crash.

My best guess would be the video driver. Try visiting the mfg's site for your video card and download the latest driver.

Thanks, but which section do I look in? There is SEcurity,Application, and System.

System. Chances are you won't find anything, but it's worth a look.

I looked into the "system" for yesterday and found something saying a reference file could not be used or something like that. Other than that it all is greek to me. LOL

I just want to know if I should be concerned that it could happen again, and it won't reboot.

Also, is this a typical event, or out of the ordinary?

If it was a driver issue it will likely happen again. A hard crash can corrupt data and prevent Windows from loading or data loss, but it's rare.

Check Windows Update to see if any driver updates are available there. Next try AIDA32 it's helpful at identifying hardware, and often provides links to driver downloads.
