I'd appreciate suggestions for an XP machine that's *very* slow to boot up fully.
I'm running virus and spyware protection software.
Thanks very much for any help!!

Not much showing in the way of Malware, so that's good! :) Let's get that out of the way first, and I'll also give you several Optional removals to help speed you back up! :)

Please open HijackThis and do a "system scan only". Place a check next to each of the following entries:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {014DA6C9-189F-421a-88CD-07CFE51CFF10} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll

Make sure ALL other programs and windows other than HijackThis are closed, and click the "Fix Checked" button.

Reboot into Safe Mode by continually tapping the F8 key as the computer begins to boot, and choose "Safe Mode" from the menu you're taken to.

Please uninstall the following Spyware related programs:

MySearch
Viewpoint

Locate the following folders and delete them:

C:\Program Files\MySearch
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint.

Reboot normally.

Now, to try and speed you up! :)

Here are several things that you can safely check and fix in HijackThis following the method above. Doing this will NOT remove the corresponding files/programs, but it will keep them from starting automatically when the computer boots:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] "C:\Program Files\Winamp\Winampa.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SBAutoUpdate] "C:\Program Files\SpywareBlaster\sbautoupdate.exe"
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
O4 - Global Startup: RAMASST.lnk = C:\WINNT\system32\RAMASST.exe

Now, two more things please!

Download CleanUpInstall the program, and then open it. Click the CleanUp! button and let it scan and clean out your computer of old temp files, etc.

Visit Active Scan and do a free online scan. Save the report it gives you!!!

Please reply here with a fresh HijackThis log and a copy of the report from ActiveScan, and let me know how things are running! :tazz:

OK, Kat, I'm working on it.

I've rebooted in Safe Mode (on the affected machine; not the one I'm using right now). I'm trying to uninstall MySearch and Viewpoint. I'm using Add/Remove Programs, reached via Control Panel.

I see nothing for "MySearch" at all.
Should I be looking somewhere else?

I see three entries for Viewpoint:

Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

Am I to remove all three of those?

Thanks :tazz:

The MySearch may be named MyBar. Check for that entry. Also, ONLY remove the Viewpoint Toolbar, not the Viewpoint Media Player. It is safe to remove the Viewpoint Manager if you wish. All that does is connect to Viewpoints' site to look for automatic updates. Personally, I do not allow ANY program to search for updates automatically other than my Anti Virus (eTrust). I prefer to get them myself, and control what is and is not downloaded. :tazz:
