I'm having difficulty ridding my computer of some type of spyware that ZoneAlarm recognizes as Aurora. I've followed all the steps from the "Before Posting A Hijackthis Log". I had been running ZoneAlarm as my firewall, Symantec 9.01 for antivirus and SpySweeper 4.0.3 as my spyware protection. I've now run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot S&D, Cleanup 4.0, ewido security suite 3.5, CW shredder & Trojan Hunter.
Each of these finds problem files & removes them, but upon rebooting I get notification that a new startup program is attempting to register. I can block it with SpySweeper, but the next time I boot the program meerly changes names. All of the source executables are in the windows/system32 folder & have created the following .exe-startup item combinations: akfcjl.exe with bvtveou, feicf.exe with paqzii, fyqgef.exe with rjppqz, ctsbxng.exe with iaegwo, qcimpld.exe with hhmwvts, uxzkiq.exe with eawkhk and finally one which shows up as (No Title). There are others I'm guessing the following Hijackthis log will provide the information you need to help me eliminate this persistent problem.
I'd had problems with Trickler (fsg_4203b.exe) and Dinst (dinst.exe) but the process recommended by your site appears to have eliminated this problem.

Hi millerm and Welcome to GeekstoGo!

You definatly have a little army inside there, this may take several passes to clear up!

Please Download the MWAV Scanner from Here

Unzip it to its predetermined Directory (C:\Kaspersky)

Locate "kavupd.exe" in the New Folder and Double Click to Update!

If you it says the signatures are more than 30 days old, keep trying!
Keep trying until you get the actual signatures!

When you see "Updates downloaded Successfully"

Please Press Enter to Continue but dont run it yet,go ahead and close it out for now!

Get Ewido update with the latest definitions!

Download RegSupreme Pro
http://majorgeeks.co..._Pro_d4256.html

Once downloaded and launched,Click Yes to Update the Cache and then close that out as well!

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Once in Safe Mode-> Scan the entire System with Ewido-> Clean all it Finds-> Be Sure to click the tab to Save a Report!

Now go to the Kaspersky folder-> Locate and Double Click "mwavscan.com" to launch the MWAV Scanner!

Once opened-> Leave the "Default Settings ticked" and add a "tick" to"Drives"-> this will light up "All Drives"-> Add a "tick" to "Scan all Files"-> Click "Scan Clean" to begin!

This Scan may take Several Hours or more to Complete,Depending on the Hard Drive Size!

Please be sure it is Completed before proceeding!

Once the Scan has finished,All entries Identified as Infected will displayed in the lower pane!

Highlight everything that is inside the lower pane and press Ctrl+C at the same time to Copy!

Open a Blank Notepad Page and Paste the results (Ctrl+V) to it and Save it to your Desktop!

Now run RegSupreme-> Click "Registry Cleaner"-> Click "Aggresive" and "Start"-> Fix everything it finds-> Name the Backup it creates and Save it somewhere safe!

Run MSCONFIG and enable everything in the startup area. To get to MSCONFIG, click on Start -> Run -> type in MSCONFIG -> click OK!

Under the "General" Tab
Make Sure Normal Startup is Checked!!

Click Apply>>Close>>Follow the Prompts to Restart!!

Restart Normal and have the PC Scanned here:
Panda Active Scan

You will need to be using Internet Explorer for the Scan to work!

Save the Report it generates

Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the reports from MWAV-> Ewido and Panda!

Wow,that looks alot better allready!

Go to Add\Remove Programs and Remove

MyWay Speed Bar<- The Name may vary just a bit!

Right-Click Here and Click "Save As" to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.

Right Click DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select "Install"

It will perform a silent process>Give it a minute to run!

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingc...es/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Open HijackThis and Click Config-> MiscTools-> Delete a file on Reboot

When the small explorer windows pops up-> Navigate to this file

C:\WINDOWS\msresearch.exe

Double Click the file and them Click Yes to Reboot!

Restart back into Safe Mode

After restarting in Safe Mode,Configure Windows to Show All Hidden Files and Folders Here is a link to help with that:
http://www.bleepingc...torial=62#winxp

Locate and Delete if found

C:\WINDOWS\msresearch.exe<- File

C:\Program Files\MyWaySA<- Folder

Open HijackThis and put a check by these but DO NOT hit the Fix Checked button yet!

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RealTray] C:\Program Files\Real\RealPlayer\RealPlay.exe SYSTEMBOOTHIDEPLAYER

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msresearch] C:\WINDOWS\msresearch.exe

Now Make sure ALL WINDOWS and BROWSERS are CLOSED and hit the Fix Checked Button!

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder!

Restart back in Normal Mode-> Post back with a fresh HijackThis log and the reports from WinPFind and Panda!

Make sure to Include the Report from Panda please!

CreteMonster-
I accomplished all the tasks as directed, but was unable to locate the following in safe mode:

C:\windows\msresearch.exe (I think that HijackThis got it on Reboot)
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA (Might have been uninstalled under the name MyWaySearchAssistant)

I then went into HijackThis & eliminated all the O4 lines, but the other two:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com...de_srchlft.html

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {4D25F926-B9FE-4682-BF72-8AB8210D6D75} - C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\1.bin\deSrcAs.dll

were not present in the log. On reboot to normal mode my computer locked up for a while when opening the HJT folder & I had to eventually restart. It appears to be working correctly now. Below are the logs:

Panda ActiveScan

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/aurora No disinfected C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe
Possible Virus. No disinfected C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\Tools\Process Viewer\ProcessViewer.exe
***************************************************************

Finally when I search my computer in normal mode for dinst.exe (removed earlier) the following file is located:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\DINST.EXE-39210A72.pf

And when I search for msresearch.exe I locate this:

OK,almost there!

Download LQfix.zip:
http://users.pandora...atchy/LQfix.zip
Unzip it and save it to your desktop, don't use it yet!

CCleaner:
http://www.filehippo...d_ccleaner.html

Reboot in Safe Mode once more!

From the LQFix folder-> Doubleclick LQfix.bat that you saved on your desktop before.
A doswindow will open and close again, this is normal.

Now Open CCleaner-> Click on Run Cleaner and let it do its thing!

Now loacate and Delete if found

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe<- File

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\7c147b4t.ini<- File

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\kgm484aj.ini<- File

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tk7r7s2k.ini<- File

Restart Normal and Install these

SpywareBlaster:
http://www.javacools...areblaster.html
Update Immediatly!

WinHelp2002 Hosts File
http://www.mvps.org/...p2002/hosts.htm

Made Easy
http://www.mvps.org/...2002/hosts2.htm

See what you can find out about these 2 files, allthough I dont think they are anything to worry about!

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AuxDrv32ds_d.ods

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\BACSCPL.cpl

If nothing else have them scanned at these 2 sites

http://virusscan.jotti.org/
and
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

Let me know what ya find out!

Now we will get rid of all the stuff you downloaded and wont need anymore in the last post!

Once the file deletion and Info gathering has finished,Disable System restore
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Visit the Windows Update Site and Check for any available Updates!

Finally Defrag the System<- Click Start-> All Programs-> Click Accessories-> Click System Tools-> Click Disk Defragmenter and let it do its thing!

Post back and let me know what you found out about the files and how the PC is running now!

Its running great! No more firewall alerts & I've run all of the following scans:

SpySweeper
AdAware
Spybot
MicroSoft AntiSpyware
Ewido
TrojanHunter
Panda
Symantec AntiVirus

None have found any remaining issues. I've attached the HijackThis log below.

It also looks like the last several steps eliminated both:

C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch\DINST.EXE-39210A72.pf

SymantecAntiVirus
ZoneAlarm
Microsoft AntiSpyware
Ad-Aware SE
ewido security suite
Spybot S&D
TrojanHunter
CWShredder
RegSupreme Pro
LQfix.bat
CCleaner
Cleanup
SpywareBlaster
MWAV
WinPFind
WinHelpHosts
LQfix.bat
HijackThis

Recommendations on what to keep...thanks.

One more question, a number of my friends from work recommend FireFox as a replacement for IE. What are your thoughts?

OK here ya go!

To be removed(Look in Add\Remove Programs for most of these!)

Microsoft AntiSpyware
ewido security suite
Spybot S&D
TrojanHunter
CWShredder
LQfix.bat
Cleanup
SpywareBlaster
MWAV
WinPFind

Hang onto to regSupreme and run it again in about 3 weeks!

Hang onto Ad Aware and SpySweeper-> Use them about once a week-> Keep them Updated!

Hang on to CCleaner and run it about once a week-> Keep it Updated!

Keep Spyware Blaster and make sure to Update it once a week!

Is Symantec bought and Paid for or did it come with the PC and is a trial version?

I have a different personal preference for a firewall but Zone Alarm is fine if you like it!

Post back and let me know about the Symantec Antivirus???

I'm sorry it took a couple days to get back to you, works been very busy. Symantec is bought & paid for, I just included it in the list so you knew what all I had to use.

I had no problem removing:

Microsoft AntiSpyware
ewido security suite
Spybot S&D
TrojanHunter
CWShredder
LQfix.bat
Cleanup

I kept SpywareBlaster (you had it in both the get rid of & keep lists)

There doesn't appear to be a simple add/remove or uninstall for Kapersky/MWAV & WinPFind. I could just delete the Kapersky folder on C: & all files associated with WinPFind, but I'm sure I'd be missing something. Any recommendations?

Nope thats it!

Just delete the Installer for MWAV along with the Kaspersky and Bases Folder!

Delete the Zip folder and Regular folder for WinPFind!

Thats it,no leftovers!
