Hi Sam thankyou for responding I am almost 3 thousand miles from the troubled PC at the moment however I promised to help them through this drama, they have little understanding of the issues.

I have installed all the usual preventative tools such as Ad-aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster and CW shredder. I thought WinAntivirus pro 2005 was a bit dodgy so replaced it with PC-cillin. Managed to clean most of the problems except for Winfixer and .adserver popups before I had to jump onto a plane for home.

I installed VNC server before I left to enable remote access and will post a new hijackthis log soon, we can start from there if you like.

Ok, let's see what we can do. :tazz:

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button

c:\windows\system32\1234abcd.exe
c:\windows\system32\xau.exe
c:\windows\system32\5fj54v9lhlhz.dll.dll.dll.dll
C:\Program Files\Mpb <-- delete this folder
C:\Program Files\Sym <-- delete this folder
C:\Program Files\oest <-- delete this folder
sser.exe

Now let's get a look at another log that may show us some hidden files.
  • Download DLLCompare.
  • Double-click on DllCompare.exe to run the program.
  • Click "Run Locate.com" and it will scan your system for files.
  • Once the scan has finished click "Compare" to compare your files to valid Windows files.
  • Once it has finished comparing click "Make a Log of what was found".
  • Click "Yes" at the View Log file? prompt to view the log.
  • Copy and paste the entire log into this topic.
  • If you accidentally close out of the log it is also saved as log.txt to where you saved DllCompare.exe.
  • Click "Exit" to exit DLLCompare.

Post the log from DllCompare but do not turn off or reboot your computer.

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\nem216.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msxslab.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bridge.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\jac.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\d2kpax.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\system32.dll

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

Please run Panda Online Virus Scan
  • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
  • There may be files that this scan will not remove.
  • Please include that information in your next post.

Reboot and post a new hijackthis log and the info from your virus scan.

Your log looks pretty good to me. How are things running on your end?

In an earlier post you asked me to check and remove "O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe" which failed, is this still an issue or can I leave it as is? Otherwise all seems fine.

You mentioned before that you couldn't fix that line. Can you fix it now?

Also look for this file and tell me if it's present.

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\winlogin.exe

Still cannot fix "O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe" with hijackthis (file in use error) nor can I find any file named winlogin.exe on the system.

and the path "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\winlogin.exe" does not exist.

Make sure that you can VIEW ALL HIDDEN FILES.

Check these locations for winlogin.exe and delete it if found.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

Sorry, accessing the infected machine remotely I was not as thorough as I should have been. Found "winlogin.exe" in the all users startup folder and deleted it then fixed the line "O4 - Global Startup: winlogin.exe" with hijackthis.

I have one other anomaly when opening a windows search window I have a blank left frame with nowhere to enter search criteria (I've been doing searches from a command line) do you know if this is a problem created by one of the malware apps or just a windows glitch?

It's a Windows thing, very doubtful that it's related to malware.

Try this:

# Click Start
# Select Run
# Enter in the command - %systemroot%\inf
# Right-click the Srchasst.inf file
# Click Install
