My desktop screen resolution is 1280x1024x32@72Hz. I run games at 1024x768x32. Does the difference impact game performance at all? Should the screen resolutions be the same in-game and out?

Well running games at higher resolutions will lower your fps slightly but the difference from what you use for games and your normal res isnt that big so i would use 1280 x 1024, its also probaby the perfect res for games not to much not to little.
