I had a reasonabley functional Win XP system running Zone Alarm with my cable modem--would get 5-10 bugs on Adaware scans done every week or so. Two days ago I decided to join the wireless networking world and to get my D-Link router to allow internet access I had to disable (and foolishly uninstall) ZA. Almost immediately I started getting pop-ups even when IE was not running. The system now shuts down randomly and I'm getting occasional ominous messages from XP's disc checking app when it starts up again. When I run ad aware or spybot now I get 30 to 50 bugs each time. Incidentally zone alarm now will not re-install--I get a vsutil.dll error message and the suggestions from the ZA site aren't working. For the time being my only firewall now is my newly installed SP2.

Here's my log. Thanks for your help. I'm glad I found this very cool site!

Thanks so much for the timely response. When I run HJT to get the log and start the fix I find that the log is now different than what I sent in to you and several of the entries you recommended I check off are not there. Other family members have of neccesity been on the computer doing e-mail and IM but not "on the internets" since I did the other log. Should I just check of what I can and let it run?
Here's the updated log...

Were you able to boot sucessfully into safemode, enable hidden files, and delete this files?

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):
C:\WINDOWS\mxTarget.dll
C:\WINDOWS\multimpp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\systb.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\lvjezvn.exe
C:\WINDOWS\satmat.exe
C:\windows\system32\winsop32.exe
C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOW~1\wmplayer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\wupdt.exe

So I checked off and got rid of what you suggested, although as I mentioned above the second time I ran HJT the log was different, went into safe mode etc., ran adaware and rebooted. Unfortunately still tons of PU's and new search bar for IE. Here's the new log. Thanks.

Next, please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Still popping up pop ups although a bunch more space seems to have appeared on my hard drive. Followed instructions last time -- no trojan found, HJT said it couldn't remove the Winsock LSP files, and I couldn't delete the Program Files\SED folder either with the usual XP delete function or McAfee QuickClean as it was in use. On a maybe related note, whenever I open my account for the first time after starting up I get a can't open message regarding "UMonitor.dll" Not sure if that's relevant or not. Here's the log. Many thanks....

You have a new variation of a VX2 infection, identified by these entries:
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

This fix is still a work in progress, but seems to be working well.
1. Download VX2Finder here: http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=37
Run Vx2Finder and click on the Click to find VX2.BetterInternet button.

Click the Make Log button.

Save the log some place convenient like My Documents. Include the contents of the log in your next reply here.

2. Download this ZIP file: http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=36
and unzip the contents to a folder, then open that folder and double click on Find.bat. It will run for a minute, then produce a log (ignore any File not found messages on the screen, it should continue anyway). Please copy and paste that log here as well.

3. Please download DllCompare from here: http://www.geekstogo...=download&id=38

When it has downloaded, run the program and click on the Run Locate.com button. When that has completed, click on the Compare button. When that completed click on the Make Log of What Was Found button. Then post the contents of that log as a reply to this post.

Only if you get an error after pressing Run Locate.com:
copy autoexec.nt from c:\windows\repair\ folder to c:\windows\system32\ folder.

4. Please also open the c:\Windows\System32 folder and see if there's a file there called Guard.tmp visible and report that here as well.
