I have included several reports I saved. The IE on my PC does not work right (stuck on "about:blank"), so I used my laptop to get the files from your site, ported them onto the PC and start isolating the problems. Outlook works fine, and each update I ran when loading the software onto the PC all worked fine.

I tried the WinsockXPFix for XP, but thta did not free up IE. I run XP SP2 on an HP. I used Clean Up, Ad-aware,Spybot S&D, Ewido & Trojan Hunter. I did not get to try Trend Housecall (Icopied an incomplete URL and IE wouldn't launch anyway).

Hi,

We will first clean out all other infections and then tackle smitfraud.


First we will need to download a few tools that will help us in the removal of your problem.

Download about:buster by RubbeRDuckY Here.
Download CWShredder Here.
Download and install CleanUp! Here

Save all of these files somewhere you will remember like to the Desktop.

Update About:Buster
  • Unzip the contents of AboutBuster.zip and an AboutBuster directory will be created.
  • Navigate to the AboutBuster directory and double-click on AboutBuster.exe.
  • Click "OK" at the prompt with instructions.
  • Click "Update" and then "Check For Update" to begin the update process.
  • If any updates exist please download them by clicking "Download Update" then click the X to close that window.
  • Now close About:Buster
Update CWShredder
  • Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
  • Click Check For Update
  • Close CWShredder
Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Please run about:buster by RubbeRDuckY:
  • Click Start and then OK to allow AboutBuster to scan for Alternate Data Streams.
  • Click Yes to allow it to shutdown explorer.exe.
  • It will begin to check your computer for malicious files. If it asks if you would like to do a second pass, allow it to do so.
  • When it has finished, click Save Log. Make sure you save it as I may need a copy of it later.
  • Reboot your computer into safe mode again
Run about:buster again following the same instructions as above, this time without the restart at the end

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Now run CleanUp!Reboot your computer into normal windows.

Please run an on-line virus scan at Kaspersky OnLine Scan or if that doesnt work, you can use TrendMicro or BitDefender. (Please post the results of the scan(s) in your next reply)

After all that, please post back with how things went as well as the logs requested and a new HiJackThis log.

I could not connect to the internet from the infected PC, so I was loading programs onto that PC from downloads I grabbed from work or my laptop. I forgot to bring the reports I ran last night.

That said, the about:blank problem did not clear up. I took a chance on interpreting the data from the HijackThis report, especially the R1 and R0 entries shown below:

I reran HJT, deleted everything that referenced about:blank or www.bestwebslinks.com/search.php?qq=%1 and R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=http://127.0.0.1:8100. After rebooting, I could change and keep a new home page -- internet functionality returned to normal operation.

I repeated the earlier steps directly from the infected PC, primarily in Safe Mode (or as per your directions). I also ran the online scan (Kapersky?) and it found Virus.Win32.nsaq.b -- I took a screen shot of that page, too. I can't recall where that was nested, but have that detail for later when I get home.

I'll get the reports affixed when I get home tonight (CDT). Any other suggestions at this point?

Hi,

The fix that I gave you earlier, takes care of the underlying files which create that problem. If we fix the sysmptoms without first fixing the underlying files, then problems would resurface.

Dont worry, it will take a couple of iterations to clean up the PC but it can definitely be done.

Post back the logs and I will have a look at them.

Please donot delete / fix any items without first consulting me. For e.g.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost (can't remember if I took this one out)


should not be fixed / deleted with HJT.
